{"id":1064,"date":"2007-05-04T06:50:00","date_gmt":"2007-05-04T10:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/johncohn.org\/base\/2007\/05\/04\/thursday-night-albany-again\/"},"modified":"2007-05-04T06:50:00","modified_gmt":"2007-05-04T10:50:00","slug":"thursday-night-albany-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/johncohn.org\/base\/2007\/05\/04\/thursday-night-albany-again\/","title":{"rendered":"Thursday night &#8211; Albany again"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"pBlogBody_260757033\" class=\"blogContent\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Long Day\u2026<span style=\"\">&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>I woke this morning at <st1:time minute=\"30\" hour=\"16\">4:30<\/st1:time> so that I could get down to <st1:city><st1:place>Albany<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> in time to host a phone meeting at <st1:time minute=\"30\" hour=\"8\">8:30<\/st1:time> without having to be still driving.<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>It was very nice waking and leaving while it was still dark.. There was a beautiful moon set as I drove down the Hinesburg road. <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i147.photobucket.com\/albums\/r319\/johncohn\/april07\/May0307070.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">It&#8217;s<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>funny because there was a beautiful<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>moonrise last night<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>that I tried to .get a picture of. . how often do you get to see both ends. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"\">&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>I find that I<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>really enjoy these solitary drives to and from NY these days. It&#8217;s the best thinking time I have.. I turn off the radio . shut off my phone and I just think.. or not think\u2026 I often talk to Sam on these drives.. or ask him for help This morning&#8217;s meditation was on &#8216;what do I <i>want<\/i> to do with my life now&#8217; \u2026<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>I emphasize <i>want<\/i> because I&#8217;m not finding\/making enough time now to do the things I really want to do. I&#8217;ve read back over the last several weeks of this journal and I can clearly see the start up of the same cycle of work obligation and stress that I was on before Sam died.. I don&#8217;t want to go back there\u2026 yet I don&#8217;t know how to avoid it.<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>Just as I hit that train of thought.. I came across the following sign on a stable gate on Route 74.. <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i147.photobucket.com\/albums\/r319\/johncohn\/april07\/May0307085.jpg\" \/>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">So.. what<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span><i>IS<\/i> a view of happiness ? I want to spend time with my family.. I want to make stuff.. <span style=\"\">&nbsp;<\/span>I also know that I want more time s working with kids and science&#8230; maybe even find a way to do that full time eventually.. Diane has said in the past that<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>I need to put that intention out<span style=\"\">&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>and the opportunities will come to me.. I need to find a way to stay sane in the meanwhile\u2026<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"\">&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>Anyway.. I made it down to the Albany NanoTech Center in time to meet about 30 friends and colleagues<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>from Burlington and maybe 50 or <span style=\"\">&nbsp;<\/span>so from our sister facility in East Fishkill NY,<span style=\"\"> <br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i147.photobucket.com\/albums\/r319\/johncohn\/april07\/May0307087.jpg\" \/><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"\"> <\/span>We&#8217;d arraigned the meeting<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>both<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>to allow us to tour the state of the art NanoCenter\u2026and to get in some good bonding time with our brethren and sistern (?) fro down south..<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>It was great seeing those folks.. many of them are good friends of mine.. s that alone made it worth the<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>trip. We got some good talks about the Center and how it works\u2026 as well as a glimpse of a recent technical breakthrough on &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/05\/03\/technology\/03chip.html?ex=1335844800&amp;en=dd75d197818c1065&amp;ei=5088&amp;partner=rssnyt&amp;emc=rss\" target=\"_self\">air gap dielectrics<\/a>&#8216;<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>by my buddy Dan E<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>that was just being announced in the press today.<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>The nanocenter helped pioneer this breakthrough with IBM research.<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span><span style=\"\">&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>I&#8217;m so proud of Dan !!!! <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"\">&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>I had to leave a bit early in order to catch the start of a work call on the drive back. I hijacked my friends David H. and Jason H to keep me company on the drive back. They&#8217;re both good friends. We had a great set of technical discussions about one of Dave&#8217;s projects always learns stuff when we talk.<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>. He&#8217;s one of the smarted guys I know when it comes to computer algorithms.<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>The drive <span style=\"\">&nbsp;<\/span>home was really beautiful.. the weather and the company were splendid. I took the guys through the small detour to see the Penfield site in<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>&#8216;Ironville&#8217;<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>that&#8217;d stumbled across last Sunday on the way home from dropping Max at the train. They thought it was pretty cool<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i147.photobucket.com\/albums\/r319\/johncohn\/april07\/May0307108.jpg\" \/><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">On the way home we happened to drive right by Homer&#8217;s place. so I dragged my friends in to see Homer&#8217;s latest love.. a 6 year old 17 foot lathe.. The only thing we can figure it was good for was turning cannon barrels. As old as it is, it still works great. Homer is planning on using it to turn columns for a new cabin he hopes to build.<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>It was good to introduce David Jason ,<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>and Homer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i147.photobucket.com\/albums\/r319\/johncohn\/april07\/May0307112.jpg\" \/> <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent: 6pt;\"><span style=\"\">&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>From there I dropped Jason and Dave off in Williston<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>and scooted out<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>to watch the end of Gabe&#8217;s Lacrosse practice. It was good watching him play.. He&#8217;s gotten very fast.<span style=\"\">&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>I was freezing so I spent nearly an hour walking around the track hoping to get warm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent: 6pt; text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i147.photobucket.com\/albums\/r319\/johncohn\/april07\/May0307118.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent: 6pt;\">After practice, Gabe and I stopped by Zachary&#8217;s for sandwiches then came home and did homework.. pretty simple evening. Diane was out with her book group and Max is still in NY. <span style=\"\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent: 6pt;\"><span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>I&#8217;m still on less than four hours of sleep from last night.. so I think I&#8217;ll close here..
