I had another high fever night last night . I woke up absolutely drenched in<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>sweat for the<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>2<sup>nd<\/sup> night in a row.. tonight Diane has suggested I sleep on a pile of towels.<span style=\"\">&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>I did wake up today feeling a little better.. by <st1:time minute=\"0\" hour=\"12\">midday<\/st1:time>, though, I <span style=\"\">&nbsp;<\/span>was back down with fever.. This time not so high.. I stayed <span style=\"\">&nbsp;<\/span>low all day and started to help Max pull together some study flash cards <span style=\"\">&nbsp;<\/span>for his Art History exam. This is one of his make up exams from the work he missed at Pratt last semester. I spent the day leafing through his <span style=\"\">&nbsp;<\/span>3&#8243; thick Janson&#8217;s History of Art. <span style=\"\">&nbsp;<\/span>This is the same book I used when I took the course 28 years ago.. I remember loving the course.. and sucking at it at the same time.<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>My professor Frau Dr. Benesch<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>(I lived in <st1:country-region><st1:place>Austria<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> then) told me I didn&#8217;t have an artistic mind.. Oh well.. <span style=\"\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>As I worked, I found myself falling into a couple of the stories\u2026 It&#8217;s just amazing how many great pieces of ancient art and architecture were built in tribute to a lost son, daughter or spouse. I resonate so strongly <span style=\"\">&nbsp;<\/span>with this need to call out to the future\u2026 &#8216;here was my son&#8217;<span style=\"\">&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>So much beauty from so much sadness.. <span style=\"\">&nbsp;<\/span>I even found myself crying over the story of <span style=\"\">&nbsp;<\/span><st1:city><st1:place>Pompeii<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> .. (a <span style=\"\">&nbsp;<\/span>town name <span style=\"\">&nbsp;<\/span>so common to us that even MS Word knows how to spell it). When <st1:city><st1:place>Pompeii<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> was destroyed in the year 79 AD by the eruption of <st1:place>Mount Vesuvius<\/st1:place> froze in time a slice of the daily life and the art of ancient <span style=\"\">&nbsp;<\/span><st1:city><st1:place>Rome<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>.. life <span style=\"\">&nbsp;<\/span>just suddenly stopped for the roughly 20,000 people who lived there. <span style=\"\">&nbsp;<\/span>It&#8217;s too melodramatic to say that our lives were &#8216;frozen&#8217; the day Sam died.. Yet everything around us reminds us of that previous life.. pictures, music.. everything .. everything. <span style=\"\">&nbsp;<\/span>Today is moving along and finding a new balance\u2026 we have fun\u2026 we&#8217;re getting to be productive again.. at the same time.. nothing can replace the role that <span style=\"\">&nbsp;<\/span>Sam played in our <span style=\"\">&nbsp;<\/span>family.. <span style=\"\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"\">&nbsp;<\/span>and that&#8217;s <span style=\"\">&nbsp;<\/span>just going to be the way it is.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"\">&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span><span style=\"\">&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span>Sometimes when I&#8217;m writing this blog I find myself backed into a corner. If I&#8217;m feeling low and write about what I&#8217;m feeling.. then I am worried that I&#8217;m bumming people out.<span style=\"\">&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>If <span style=\"\">&nbsp;<\/span>instead I try to force myself into someplace funny or newsy then I feel like I wasn&#8217;t being true to myself.. in which case.. why bother writing ?<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>Well.. the last part of the day turned out to be better than the beginning. Gabe and Diane came home around <st1:time minute=\"30\" hour=\"19\">7:30<\/st1:time> from Gabe&#8217;s first real Lacrosse practice (He&#8217;s # 5 in the midfield)<span style=\"\">&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 448px; height: 335px;\" src=\"http:\/\/i147.photobucket.com\/albums\/r319\/johncohn\/mar2507014.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Everybody seemed energized from being outside in daylight. Max had some productive time working on his Light Color and Design project.. which is something like: <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Choose a shape\u2026 any shape.. then use that shape to portray each of the seven deadly sins using only instances of that single shape.. though you can change the arrangement, number and <span style=\"\">&nbsp;<\/span>color. That sounds hard !<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>Max also worked on a movie project for his English class at Champlain and managed to comb is hair straight for the part (Scott looks disturbed by the new hairdoo !) <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 421px; height: 315px;\" src=\"http:\/\/i147.photobucket.com\/albums\/r319\/johncohn\/mar2507018.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">We all came together for dinner at about <st1:time minute=\"30\" hour=\"8\">8:30<\/st1:time>. It was the first time we&#8217;d all eaten together in 2 weeks. We lit our Sam candle. . Max cooked some sort of scallop dish with lemon zest and garlic that was fabulous\u2026 (it was zesty !) .. just as the four of us were sitting down, Scott came in.. then Rusty showed up because his car broke down on our road. The table was full of people. It felt good. We spent the rest of the evening watching really funny\/stupid movies on YouTube .<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"\">&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>Life is sometimes bleak.. and sometimes it&#8217;s full.. you never know Sam.. you never know..<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">-jc<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m not up to writing much .. and this flu has put me in a pretty low mood.
