I did it during the Colony days to see what people thought of the show.. .. or&#8230; more honestly.. what people thought of me on the show. Anyway never turned it off. Most of the time it gives me mention of talks I&#8217;ve done.. which I already know about.. occasionally it turns up something surprising &#8230; like today  it turned up <a href=\"http:\/\/www.managers.org.uk\/practical-support\/management-community\/blogs\/does-bad-hair-day-bad-manager\">this<\/a>..<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the text of that article<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h1>Does a bad hair day = a bad manager?<\/h1>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"content-area\">\n<div id=\"content-area-inner\">\n<div id=\"node-63030\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<blockquote>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Submitted by <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.managers.org.uk\/users\/23\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Adrian Gaskell<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> MCMI on Thu, 20\/10\/2011 &#8211; 11:03<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.managers.org.uk\/sites\/default\/files\/imagecache\/user_image_default\/pictures\/picture-23.jpg?resize=80%2C80\" alt=\"User profile picture\" width=\"80\" height=\"80\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Towards the back end of last year <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.adigaskell.org\/blog\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">I<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> wrote about a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.managers.org.uk\/practical-support\/management-community\/blogs\/do-looks-matter-recruitment\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> investigating the influence our appearance has on our success at job  interviews. \u00a0The research suggested that the prettiness of the candidate  had a big impact on their success at interview, with the rate of  success dependant upon the sex and attractiveness of those doing the  hiring.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">This followed previous research from <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.managers.org.uk\/practical-support\/management-community\/blogs\/Experts-find-the-face-of-good-managers-6161\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Kent University<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> proposing an ideal &#8216;face&#8217; for management. \u00a0The study found that  appearance was as crucial as attitude and looked at which  characteristics were seen to be best for male managers and female  managers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">For a male manager, a pronounced brow and forehead were found to be  trusted more, while for women, thin eyebrows, wider eyes and fuller lips  made up the face of a future inspirational leader.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">What risks do we take by employing such stereotyping however, be they  conscious or unconscious? \u00a0Have a look at the photo below. \u00a0It&#8217;s of a  man called John Cohn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/leadchangegroup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/mpb-leadchange-leighphoto6H-043011-150x150.jpg?resize=150%2C150\" alt=\"john cohn\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">He&#8217;s an IBM fellow and all round inspirational chap. \u00a0See this <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/leadchangegroup.com\/cultivating-idea-leadership-views-from-an-ibm-fellow\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> for some of his thoughts on leadership. \u00a0At first glance though, would  you believe him to be an inspiring thinker? \u00a0Does he fit the identikit  manager our subconcious forms for us?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">After all, such prejudices are sadly commonplace. \u00a0For instance <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.managers.org.uk\/practical-support\/management-community\/blogs\/work-do-pounds-mean-prizes\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">research earlier<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> this year revealed how our weight impacts our earning potential. \u00a0Likewise <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/science\/science-news\/5887567\/Tall-men-earn-more-than-shorter-colleagues-research-claims..html\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">height has been linked to earning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">, with taller men found to earn more than us vertically challenged ones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">In an age when we should be striving to get the very best talent  working in our teams, are our in built prejudices hindering the chances  of otherwise exceptional candidates?<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>LOL !..\u00a0\u00a0 Bad hair day ?!.. every day is a bad hair day for me&#8230; but I make do.. in fact.. the only reason I was told I got the job on the Colony was that I had &#8216;weird hair&#8217;.. I know I&#8217;ve talked about this here once before when I was called out in another article (cited above) for looking deranged. .. but I actually don&#8217;t mind the way I look.. would I like to be handsome and youthful. . sure.. but since I can&#8217;t change that..
