{"id":347,"date":"2007-05-20T05:26:00","date_gmt":"2007-05-20T09:26:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/johncohn.org\/base\/2007\/05\/20\/saturday-night-middle-america\/"},"modified":"2007-05-20T05:26:00","modified_gmt":"2007-05-20T09:26:00","slug":"saturday-night-middle-america","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/johncohn.org\/base\/2007\/05\/20\/saturday-night-middle-america\/","title":{"rendered":"Saturday night &#8211; Middle america"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"pBlogBody_266500728\" class=\"blogContent\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p>We had a very peaceful day.<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>We woke late at Diane&#8217;s brother Steve and his wife Denise&#8217;s house. .Our nephew Michael had showed up sometime in the night.. so it was food catching up with him. <span style=\"\">&nbsp;<\/span>After a breakfast of cold pizza, Steve and I went out for a 5 mile run on the back country roads<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>Whoever told me that Kansas was flat was lying.. It was great talking with Steve. it helped slow him down so I could keep up and it was fun getting his views on stuff. Steve retired from the army after 28 years. It was fun doing the compare and contrast between our employers.<span style=\"\">&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>On our run<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>we had the &#8216;kids today&#8217; talk\u2026 and the &#8216;George Bush&#8217;<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>and &#8216;<st1:country-region><st1:place>Iraq<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>&#8216; talks..<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>Our views are surprisingly similar given how different our backgrounds are.. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>Steve is also an avid history buff.. World <st1:place><st1:city>History<\/st1:city>, <st1:country-region>US<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place> History .. and even his family history. He showed us the most amazing family history he&#8217;s been working on. . He&#8217;s done a tremendous amount of research on old ship&#8217;s manifests, pension records and travel documents to trace both of his and Diane&#8217;s parents lines back in time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Here are Diane&#8217;s granparents passports from Italy. Her grandfather had already been living in the US when his first wife died. He went back to italy to pick up Diane&#8217;s grandmother Piearina <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p>&nbsp;<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i147.photobucket.com\/albums\/r319\/johncohn\/may07\/May1907003.jpg\" \/><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p>Here they are as they boarded the boat to America<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i147.photobucket.com\/albums\/r319\/johncohn\/may07\/May1907007.jpg\" \/><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s Constantine as an older man<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i147.photobucket.com\/albums\/r319\/johncohn\/may07\/May1907020.jpg\" \/><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Diane&#8217;s Grandmother , Pierina is in the center of this picture.. I&#8217; always thought she looks very much like Diane ..<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i147.photobucket.com\/albums\/r319\/johncohn\/may07\/May1907006.jpg\" \/> <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">These family histories are even more important to me since Sam&#8217;s passing. Itss&#8221;s so important for us to capture these memories. My dad has also put together a family history . It&#8217;s a great read.<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>I think I&#8217;ll try to link all of these documents from Sam&#8217;s website.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p>Steve managed to<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>pull a Mark Twain and convinced Gabe to cut the back 40 with his tractor\u2026 Gabe loved it.<span style=\"\">&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><object enablejsurl=\"false\" enablehref=\"false\" saveembedtags=\"true\" allowscriptaccess=\"never\" allownetworking=\"internal\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" allowscriptaccess=\"never\" allownetworking=\"internal\" height=\"389\" width=\"430\" data=\"http:\/\/vid147.photobucket.com\/player.swf?file=http:\/\/vid147.photobucket.com\/albums\/r319\/johncohn\/may07\/mow.flv\"><param name=\"allowScriptAccess\" value=\"never\"><\/param><param name=\"allowNetworking\" value=\"internal\"><\/param><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/vid147.photobucket.com\/player.swf?file=http:\/\/vid147.photobucket.com\/albums\/r319\/johncohn\/may07\/mow.flv\"><\/param><\/object><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">While he played farmer, <st1:city><st1:place>Elizabeth<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> took Diane and me on an explore of nearby <st1:city><st1:place>Leavenworth<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> knasas. <st1:city><st1:place>Leavenworth<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> is best known as the site of a large federal and military penitentiary\u2026<span style=\"\">&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>In the mid 1800&#8217;s it was an important way point on the way west. Lewis and Clark came through here on their trip through.<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>We walked down to the <st1:place><st1:placetype>River<\/st1:placetype> <st1:placetype>Shore<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place> of the <st1:place>Kansas  river<\/st1:place> where large riverboats used to land\u2026 There was serious flooding here a few weeks back and the site has been pretty messed up. Here&#8217;s a swimming pier that was ripped up<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i147.photobucket.com\/albums\/r319\/johncohn\/may07\/May1907046.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">And here I am ankle deep in the residual mud<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i147.photobucket.com\/albums\/r319\/johncohn\/may07\/May1907048.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Around <st1:time minute=\"30\" hour=\"15\">3:30<\/st1:time> we all piled into cars and drove to a nice Italian restaurant to celebrate <st1:city><st1:place>Elizabeth<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>&#8216;s graduation. Very nice\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i147.photobucket.com\/albums\/r319\/johncohn\/may07\/May1907056.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p>&nbsp; <\/o:p><br \/>Once we got home, our niece Stephainie showed up with her Italian greyhound<span style=\"\">&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>Zoey.. that made 6 dogs\u2013 3 Italian greyhounds (Ziggy , Calvin and Hobbes,) and two German shorthairs : (Bones<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>and Zena )<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i147.photobucket.com\/albums\/r319\/johncohn\/may07\/May1907059.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i147.photobucket.com\/albums\/r319\/johncohn\/may07\/May1907039.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i147.photobucket.com\/albums\/r319\/johncohn\/may07\/May1907038.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">&nbsp;Four goats: (Pippy, Julie.
