Michael lives in Brooklyn, not far from max.. he has two kids that live in Manhattan. He&#8217;s&nbsp; retired and he&#8217;s using&nbsp; some of his time to try and reconstruct a history of our family. He visited Israel sometime in the past and took this picture of my great-great grandfather Avraham Baruch&#8217;s grave stone on the Mount of Olives near Jerusalem. Avraham had traveled to the middle east at a pretty advanced age as part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bilu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bilu (\u05d1\u05d9\u05dc&#8221;\u05d5\u200e) movement<\/a> , a late 19th century Zionest back to nature movement. Michael and I tried to make out the inscription ..&nbsp; As best as we can make out it says<\/p>\n<p>\u05e4&#8221;\u05e0 (P.N ) and abbreviation for \u05e4\u05d4 \u05e0\u05d8\u05de\u05df<em> (po nikbar)<\/em>&nbsp; or &#8216;here lies&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Avraham Baruch (his name)<\/p>\n<p>\u05d4\u05db\u05d4\u05df Ha Cohen (the priest caste&nbsp; (and my last name))<\/p>\n<p>\u05de\u05e4\u05df\u05d3\u05d5\u05dc&nbsp; Mi Ponodel (from <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pand%C4%97lys\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pondel <\/a>the town in Lithuania where he was from now called Pandelys.)<\/p>\n<p>then a line about dates..&nbsp;&nbsp; which I can&#8217;t read.. Michael says he died Jan 18 1882<\/p>\n<p>Then an acronym \u05ea\u05e0\u05e6\u05d1&#8221;\u05d4<\/p>\n<p>which I found is an acronym of<\/p>\n<p>\u05ea\u05d4\u05d9\u05d4 \u05e0\u05e9\u05de\u05ea\u05d5 \u05e6\u05e8\u05d5\u05e8\u05d4 \u05d1\u05e6\u05e8\u05d5\u05e8 \u05d4\u05d7\u05d9\u05d9\u05dd<\/p>\n<p>which means &#8220;<span style=\"font-size: small;\">May his soul be bound up in the bond of everlasting life<\/span>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/johncohn.org\/base\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/greatgreatgrandfathersgrave.jpg\" alt=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p title=\"Monday, January 30, 2012 at 10:35pm\" data-utime=\"1327980925\">&nbsp;I lokked up Ponodel.. now Pandelys and found it&#8217;s just north of Kaunas ad Vilnous.. the main cities I knew which was near my ancestors. Michael says the family claimed to be from near Kupiskis. I remember my folks tlaking about&nbsp; &#8216;Kova Gabonya&#8217;.. not sure how to spell it.. but I believe it means the province of Kaunas.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/johncohn.org\/base\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/pandelys.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3533\" title=\"pandelys\" src=\"http:\/\/johncohn.org\/base\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/pandelys.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"825\" height=\"605\" srcset=\"http:\/\/johncohn.org\/base\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/pandelys.jpg 825w, http:\/\/johncohn.org\/base\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/pandelys.jpg 300w, http:\/\/johncohn.org\/base\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/pandelys.jpg 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ponodel, like many Jewish <em>shetles<\/em> has a tragic past. it was a martyred city . There are some pretty graphic accounts of the end of the town <a href=\"http:\/\/yoffeyoffe.blogspot.com\/2010\/09\/ponendel-jewish-history.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp; Be warned.. they are pretty graphic.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s strange and comforting to be sitting here in my warm, comfortable house on the other side of the planet, from the comfortable distance of time&nbsp; thinking about Avarahm Baruch. What strength .. or fear.. or both would it have taken for him to leave his town.. and his family as an older man and make the very difficult trek to the&nbsp; middle east. What would it have been like for a frail scholar from&nbsp; norther Europe to arrive in the inhospitable dessert that was Jerusalem in the late 19th century.&nbsp; He must have know that he was buying a one way ticket on that boat.
