This is a big week\ufffc For high-performance computing. The international supercomputing conference is taking place in Denver. I woke this morning to find out that the Satori super computer that we have donated to MIT Was number four on the green 500 list. The green 500 list is all of the Top 500 fastest computers sorted by their energy efficiency. Our machine\ufffc Is the fourth most energy efficient super computer in the world right now. The first two were exotic Japanese test computers that were immersed in oil. The third one is our sister computer AIMOS at RPI which is part of our Albany AI hardware center. The fifth machine, the one after us, is the summit supercomputer. That means that numbers 3,4 and 5 were based on IBM technology. I’m very proud of that<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

I’m also proud that our computer\u2026 Which is air cooled\u2026 Is by far the greenest computer on the list. The Massachusetts green high-performance computing center (mghPCC.org)\u2026 Where it lives is run 100% on renewable power. In fact there’s an on-site Hydro generator that creates more than enough energy to run our computer\u2026 It’s an amazing story in a time where ai use of computers is taking up more and more energy\ufffc\ufffc\ufffc<\/p>\n

I want to thank the large crew of people who helped make this machine happen\u2026 Starting with my friend Dr. John Kelly, Chris Hill our colleague at Mit, the folks at the Mit \u2013 Ibm Wattson AI Lab. (David Cox and Mark Weber in particular) \ufffcAnd all the folks in the power computing group\u2026 I want to specially call out my friend Florin Manaila who designed the system, Craig Bickerstaff who help me navigate all of the political and technical aspects of ordering system like this, and Fred Robinson and his team and services who built the machine\u2026 And all the wonderful people in global university programs who helped with the donation (Peggy Strong and Ken Pisano in particular)\ufffc\ufffc\ufffc<\/p>\n

I also want to thank the four legged Satori\u2026 For her support. Here she is this evening taking in the news\ufffc<\/p>\n
