Saturday night – calor humano

Nice slow, sleepy day.. just what I needed.. Diane and I took the dogs for about a 2 hour hike up Honey Hollow. We spent some of that time exploring some new trails we’d never followed.  There were some great pools and waterfalls along the way. It’s great finding something new that close to your house..

About the only thing I really got done today was to start unpacking, cleaning and repairing the electronics from the Burning Man Timecycle. The wiring for the lights got chewed up a few times.. and was completely covered with dust from the Playa.   I’m still covered with that dust even after trying to wash it off several times..

I got the first view in daylight of a battlefield repair I did with duct tape and electrical tape while hanging ten feet in the air, in near total darkness at 3 AM on the playa.. it looked  as bad as I thought it did.. but it worked !

I learned that there was one more mechanical failure with the Timecycle after Billy and I left for the airport around 2AM last Sat. That failure managed to chew up one of the rotary connection hubs that supplied voltage to the wheels. I was happy to find that the cool 2 connector mercury commutator I’d used was still intact.. and not leaking.. leaking mercury is bad…

The rest of the day was pretty blissed out.. we did listen to a good podcast interview which Mike from the Colony made.. I liked hearing someone else’s answers to the same questions I always get asked.

Despite my attempts not to think.. I did have one sort of deep thought today that stuck with me. 2 days ago I attended a welcome home party for a work colleague who’d been on an IBM service Corps trip to Brazil.. He told us about a Latin American concept he discovered in Brazil  called “calor humano”.. or human heat.. or human warmth. The actual meaning ., he said, went beyond the basic concept of warmth.. it spoke to the joy people get from being together.. He told us how the Brazilians hung out together after work.. went to each others houses all the time, hugged one another frequently, and hung out in each others offices all the time. He also said that some of the common practices we have… e.g. working from home, or frequent conference calls were not as prevalent there.. he said people needed to be close to one another to really understand one another and get things done.

The concept may have left my head had it not been for a second conversation I had yesterday. I was speaking with a new friend and protegee down in Rio de Jainairo.. and we also talked about “calor humano”..   Interesting..   anyway.. the idea kept rattling around in my head and the more I think of it, the more I see how many of our modern work trends, working at home frequently, distributed worldwide teams, endless conference calls or web meetings are all threatening that basic human need we have to be near our colleagues. I experience it more and more every day.. … we believe we’re becoming more efficient and flexible.. but at what cost ?  I see that folks are becoming more detached from their jobs , from their colleagues and from their companies. In my own job  and most of my colleagues,  I rarely work face to face with anyone anymore.. my entire job is on the phone or on a computer.. I MISS PEOPLE !

I’m wondering if we’re thinking about the global work environment totally wrong. Often now we try to globalize tasks so that a single job may have folks participating virtually from  many locations.. sounds good.. but.. more often than not  these people hardly know one another.. they’ve never have met in person.. never have drank a beer together.. don’t know each others families, etc.   how can we expect them to care deeply about their joint work ?

What if instead of dividing all jobs into global exercises where we picked the skills form across the world.. might it not be better to return more to the idea of decomposing work into closely knit groups of people working face to face on well defined problem that were coupled together globally  ?   I know it sounds naive.. but I’m being serious here.  There are many ways we can divide our work.. the current wisdom of globalizing each task just doesn’t seem to be working to me.. it’s draining the humanity out of our jobs..   I’m going to start thinking of ways to start reversing this trend and  restore a little calor humano in my own little sphere..  What do you all think ? Am I off base ? A luddite ? What ?

end of rant

Friday night – Honey, you gotta have a flamethrower

I just learned by way of the blogs that when I was showing Diane around the Colony right after I arrived I showed her my flame thrower.. an she said.. ‘why do you need a flamethrower’. I  said :..Oh.. Honey, you gotta have a flamethrower !”..   What other circumstances would have allowed me to say that ?!

I can’t believe that the show will be over in 2 episodes .. it’s been so much fun. I can’t go anywhere without bumping into soemone who recognizes me from the show.. it’s weird and fun…   I love talking about the show.. but it’s also strange to have these lopsided relationships.. folks know me.. and I don’t know them (yet)..
It’s an interesting challenge to balance my public extrovert and private introvert.. In two weeks it will all start to fad.. which will be both sad and a relief..

Not too much to report for the day.. I worked a long hard day.. but it was pretty satisfying.. After work Diane and I dropped gabe and his friends off at dinner then headed downtown for the ‘Art Hop’ One of our first and only stops was at the Champlain College exhibit. The Emerging Media Center folks were all there/ It’s always wonderful to see teh,. I even got to see some stuff I worked on.. here’s Awesome (her names really Alison.. but I always call her Awesome) demonstrating the breathing game I helped create. It’s a prototype driving game that is controlled by a spirometer.. a device for measuring breath flow and lung capacity. I wrote the low level C++ code that interfaces the spirometer to the flash environment for the game.  The idea is to make the breathing exercises that kids with Cystic Fibrosis  have to do more fun. The kids breathing control the cars speed and steering. It’s actually really fun and challengeing to use    I was so happy and proud to see the whole game working.  These Champlain kids are so clever !

They also had some slide shows of some work I’d done at the Governors Institute  summer camp. Here’s a kid hooked up to the Van De Graaf generator.

They had a bunch of other artwork around. including this piece.. which is a copy of a stature that keeps following me around (Chris W has one, Linda P’ has one.. then this one.. what’s it mean ? )

This guy had a home built theremin.

This guy had robots made out of clay which was deigned to look like rusted metal.

We hadn’t gotten too far into the art hop when Gabe called. There were no movies that they could get into that they wanted to see.. We left the art hop, picked them uo and took them home. It’s Kristenn’s birthday (yes.. 9/11 !) .. so we had a small part for her. I gave her a pack of pink fake mustaches..,.. every girl should have one.

OK.. I’m falling asleep.. time to post and go to bed.. .
Nite all.. Nite Sam !

Thursday night – space station

Friends,
Last night I asked for you all to consider voting for the ‘Shine a Light’ nomination for our friends at Talent Skate park. They’ve been nominated for a $100K grant to support their work in the community. Several folks have pointed out that the process for voting is a little hard to figure out..We love these guys.. so we want to do whatever it takes to improve their chances. If you’re willing to vote.. here’s what you need to do:

1. Register for shine a light
2. Login to ShineALight
3. Vote for Talent‘s nomination by hitting the button as shown below

Thanks for doing that for us…

OK.. what happenede today.. oh yeah.. the end of burning man !.. The guys made it to Vermont late, late last night after thier three day drive back from the Nevada dessert.  I’d arrainged for a big work crew this mornign to help them unpack the truck..

The guys were happy but tired.. really tired..

I got there about 8:15…. but had to start work around 9..   so I

couldn’t hang around. I did get to see Homer and David.. Then went over

to the Markowsky’s to sift through and organize the Time cycle

electronics.

Steve and Eben M. were there working. Eben was doing seem cool artwork for the Art Hop tomorrow..

Steve showed me around the wonderful machines that he and his dad were working on.. Mostly Ferrari’s.. it was a beautiful shop.. filled with beautiful machines.

I said mostly ferrari’s

this one will be worth about $2,000,000 when complete… It’s a living…

I was most impressed with the engine work.. Steve was rebuilding this 1961 ferrori engine.. what an amazing guy.. (he worked out the hydraulic drive for the time cycle)

Even with that early start.. I managed to get in an over filled day at work.. long.. but interesting.

After work, Diane brought Amy to work so I could take her to a work party.. On the way she spotted some solar cells.. she wanted to take them home to the colony .. but I stopped her !

Around 8:30 I walked outside to watch the international space staiton make a spectacular transit of the sky.. it was like a bright star moving across the night sky.. It was cool knowing when and where to look for a cool thing like that..

OK.. gotta go watch a movie a firend of ours was in.. I’ll report on it tomorrow.. Night folks.. Night Sam

Wednesday night – two requests

Friends..
   First.. two requests: .

1) we still need help tomorrow morning (9AM) unloading the Time Cycle at Peter Markowski’s (462 Monkton Road, Vergennes, VT 05491. 802.877.2645). We have too much work and not enough hands. Please show up if you can…

2) our good friends at Talent Skate Park have been nominated for a $100,000 ShineALight grant from  American Express . These grants are for small businesses that have done good community service. Talent does benefits for all sorts of good causes.. For example, they’ve held three benefits for the Friends of Sam charity to help make an injured snowboarder’s house wheel chair acceptable, they’ve helped reunite Somali families.. and more recently, they’ve helped Friends of Sam raise money to dig 3 wells in rural Cambodia. Talent also runs a summer skate camp which they make available for free to kids in need.

They are wonderfully generous with their time, their facility and their money.. They are so deserving of this grant. The grants are competitive.. the proposals wiht the highest number of endorsements win the awards. If you have a sec, please look at this link  and read about the good work that Talent has done. If you agree that they are deserving, please add your vote by registering and submitting an endorsement for this nomination. Thanks !!

OK.. what else happened today… hmmm.. Oh, here’s soemthing cool, while I was working. Julie and Sam R dropped by with a copy of last weeks Times Argus. Gabe’s on the cove ! It’s a picture form last weekend’s Rail Jam at Bolton.

Here’s a better pic of that image.

It was a long hard work day.. so I was glad when it was time to knock off for the day. Diane. Gabe, Amy and I headed down town to do some shopping. Amy immediately wen for the Zombie books. Seems Zombies are everywhere in the post-post apocalypse !

We walker down to the waterfront to get some dinner.. but the Skinny pancake was closed AGAIN ! .   So we wondered down the waterfront until we found another place.. the ‘Breakwater’ .. It was a nice place..  We ran into our old friends Ellen, Kenny and WIll (Diane was present at Will’s birth !)

It was a a great place to catch up on our lives and let them get to know Amy.. and watch the sky start to darken.

OK.. my eyes are darkening,. can’t stay awake.. so  I’ll say good night.. Night folks, Night Sam !
