Thursday night – Uncle Arnall

Diane called me a little earlier tonight to tell me thtat my great uncle Dr. Arnall Patz died peacefully in his sleep last night. He was 89 years old. He was the patriarch of my dad’s side of the family . the, youngest brother of my grandmother Madalyn .. and son of my great grandparents Sarah and Sam Patz who came over to this country from Lithuania in the early part of the last century. He was always like a big brother to my dad and his brother JM.
Arnall was a great man, He was an Ophthalmologist and emeritus professor at John’s Hopkins university. His research preserved the sight of countless thousand of people. His discovery of the linkage of high oxygen doses and  retionopathy in premature babies  prevented blindness in many premature infants. His work in laser surgery for diabetic retinapathy did the same thing to reduce the incidence of retinal degeneration in adult diabetics. I remember watching grainy black and white 8mm movies of Arnall’s early experiments with using ruby laser for retinal reattachment on raccoons.    When Arnall won the Lasker prize for his research in 1956.. the award was presented to him by Helen Keller.

I remember how proud we all were when Uncle Arnall won the Presidential medal of freedom in 2004 ( along with Doris Day and Pope John Paul.:-) . I remember seeing pictures of him and Aunt Ellen with then Pres. George W. Bush getting the award. I told him that standing next to Bush was the closest anyone in our family had ever been to being a a Republican.
All those honors wern’t really what made Arnal special. it was his humanity.. I remember when my ’71 VW bus broke down in Virginia on my way back to college once.  I’d cracked a head.  I did a battlefield repair which gave me enough compression to coast to Arnall and Ellen’s house in Baltimore. I stayed therefor several days under the car trying to nurse it back to life while Arnall and Ellen gave me encouragement, food and a place to sleep. I’ll never forget that. I also remember Arnall’s 75th birthday. Our families took over a camp in Rangely Maine . There was a huge circle of kids, grand kids and nieces and nephews. I remember one picture where all the males lined up to show our skinny legs, skinny bods with love handles and hairless tops.. All carbon copies.. most of us scientists.. all of us goofy as hell.
Anrnall was the last surviving link to a generation that made the jump to the new world.. (Arnall was born in this country) survived the Holocaust, and established a new life in this country. I often think of what it must have been like growing up as a first generation immigrant jew in the rural south of 1930’s Georgia..   found this link to a census record in Elberton Georgia that lists all my ancestors as ‘Hebrew’s  When Arnall’s brother Louis and sister in law Ethel were killed in a plain crash. Arnal and Ellen unofficially adopted their kids Sam, Harry and Sarah.. They grew up as brother and sister to Arnall and Ellens own kids John. David, Susie and Bllly.

Arnall.. you did so much good in this world.. !  You are loved and missed

Gnite all.. gnite Sam

ednesday night – night riders final

Insanely busy day.. got back from a run at 8 got on the phone.. and had only 10 minutes of off phone time until Diane got home. I never even got out of my running things. It was still bright and beautiful outside.. so Diane and I took the dogs for a walk to the lower gorge. It so felt like spring !

THere was still snow on the beech of the gorge, but the ice had cleared from the river.. perfect for a quick dip.. Nothing  brings you in touch with life like dunking into cold., cold water

I toweled off wiht my short and in a minute or so I was warm and dry.. or at least dry..

The sun was goign down and giving everything a nice glow.. including Diane..

As soon as we got home it was tiem to head up to Night Riders. This was the final event of the season. it was still a little blue in the sky when we got up there.. another sure sign of spring.

After Gabe’s last run. we retreated to teh bar and listened to the band there.. they even played 2 Townes Van Zaondt songs for me as a request.. they were excellent..

While we were sitting there, I saw one of the iBM commercials.. the one wiht my friend Julia.. Several other folks said that they played the one of me, too.. that’s pretty wierd !.. Please let me knwo if you see it . too.

After a while we wentdown to the closing awards for the season. Turns out. Gabe had a good night.. He came in third for the evening.. and .. third for the season overall.. . we’re really proud of him !!! he’s really had an amazing year..

His buddy Dylan came in first which is great . too

There was another surprise in there.. Every yearfor the past 3 years the Sam Cohn Foundation sponsors an award in Sam’s Honor to the Skiier or Rider who has the best spirit, best team mind set, and who has the most fun. The judges make the choice.. not us..

This year, they chose Gabe !..  He and we were so surprised.. but then.. when I think of whet the award recognizes.. I’d choose him too

It was a sweet moment..  Sam would be proud to see his bro- recognized like this..

OK folks.. time for bed.. sleep well friends,
nite all, nite sam

Tuesday night – chip fest

life continues to swirl around me.. lots of interesting stuff.. too much to take in, sometimes. Had a nice break today when we all stopped to celebrate the successful shipping of a big computer system that we’d been working on for several years.. It’s called P7.. and even though it was design mostly in Austin. many folks in Burlington had a  hand in it’s creation.    It’s a big thrill for most of us to see the chips and systems that we’ve been working on so long. So much of what we experience of these things is on a comouter scrren.. holding it your hand makes it more real !

My boss, John and my peer Susan drove up from NY to host the event. It was very good seeing them both.   Mostly we just talk by hone. in fact.. I’m usually the only person in my department in Vermont.. Today there were 5 of us !

We ended the celebration by getting a bunch of the management folks up in the fron t singing a version of ‘Good Time Rock and Role’   modified to be about the new System..

We sounded terrible.. but hey.. .. have I ever passed up a chance to embarrass myself publicly ?

OK.. I can hardly stay awake.. gotta sleep now.. More later ..
Nite all.. Nite Sam
