Monday night – like denmark.. only snowier

We woke today to find that we’d gotten more than 2 feet of new snow in the night.. about twice what we expected.. it continued to snow through the day. but the time I got home at 6.. it was close to 3 feet  My car got stuck in our unplowed driveway and we all had to dig it out.. I ..think we have 3 feet solid in our yard… In the woods there must already have been 2-3 feet before this snowfall .. it’s amazing..   Call me crazy, but I love snow.. any time.. anywhere.. I never get tired of it.. I’ll take a foot of snow over a 90 degree day anytime..

.. Which reminds me.. well.. actually it doesn’t remind me of anything.. but I’m grasping for a segue here.. My friend Mikael in Sweden sent me the following this afternoon. It’s a chart that compares the portion of female legislators  of certain countries to the same percentage in US states.. (huh ?).. well the good news is that Vermont comes in 4th fro the top right after Denmark.. .. I see we trail Sweden (Nice Mikael) .. and that darn Rawanda.. Rawanda and Vermont have a long grudge match when it comes to these things..   Note tha we’re still a good 1.5 % above the pesky Andorra (Vermont ftw !!)

I love this place…

Sunday night – the thaw

Today and yesterday were the first real thaw of the year.. Usually, we have a day or two in January  and a day or two in February where the temperature will hover above freezing for long enough to start melting the snow pack.. Sometimes it rains during the thaw… and it gets really messy.. that’s the time of worst flooding..

Well this year, we had no appreciable thaw in Jan or Feb… On top of hat we have more than 3 feet more snow than average for the year. Most of that snow is still sitting in the hills waiting for the temperature to go above freezing..  Even with the packing and the rain we’ve had, the snow is 3 to four feet deep everywhere in the woods..  It’s going to be amazing when it lets go..

Diane, the dogs and I went or a quick snow shoe up honey hollow this afternoon.. Even after the brief thaw last night (It’s in the mid 30’s).. the tine Honey Hollow Creek was roaring down the canyon it’s carved  out after  millions of these spring  thaws..

From both sides of the path, tiny tributarys found their way down the mountain and joined in the rush to the Winooski  a mile or so below.

Here’s an old car I often visit. I love watching it slowly return to the earth.. You get an idea of the depth of the snow pack from this photo.

Here are my girls.. looking snowy an cute.

I am looking forward to the thaw now.. I love the snow.. I love the cold.. but I also love change. The thaw gives way to spring.. longer days. crocuses, etc.. I’m ready for that..

Maybe I’m thawing a little inside, too

Saturday night – nap time

nice day… I spent the whole day hanging out with family .. first we went to watch Gabe  compete in the last USASA slope style snowboard event at Smugglers Notch (he came in 2nd !). The whole event was about 5 hours.. so we had lots of sitting around time. I find that when I stop moving, even for 2 minutes, I fall instantly asleep. First I fell asleep (nap 1)  as Diane and I were sitting in the woods watching some of the riders.. then I laid down in the snow.. and fell asleep again.(nap 2) .   We finished at Smuggs around 3.. .. I started to drive home.. but just made jeffersonville before I realized I was too sleepy to drive.. Diane took over and I was unconscious in about 2 min (nap3) , again.

We got home with just enough time to get home change clothes and head out to or friend Uwe’s  Feldenkreis seminar on the eyes. .. I knew I was in trouble when I learned that we’d all spend most of the two hour class lying on our backs in a dark room.. I think I slept through 45 minutes of it.. I woke up several times.. but just couldn’t stay consious. (nap 4 – actually about 3 sub-naps) . it was fun and relaxing anyway.

We got home around 8:30 and Deb had cooked a great dinner.. Misty and Randy were over and we hung out an talked to them.. at least until I fell asleep a mid sentence (nap 5) ..

Now I’m lying in bed wide awake.. How did that happen ? 🙂

FRiday night – happy birthday Vermont

I heard this evening on the Writes Almanac that today is the 220th anniversary of the funding of the sate of vermont … We became the 14th state on march 4th, 1791..   ‘March forth.!;. the only date that’s an order…   well actually ‘March first !’ . is also an order.. but I digress.

I also learned on the Writes Almanac that Vermont and New Hampshire are the least religious states in the union. Fewer than 50 percent of folks in both states say they believe in G-d.. compared to about 74% nationwide.. I heard too that Vermont voted for Republican presidents for every year from 1791 until 1992… with the exception of 1964.. but has voted for democrats in every election since 92  .. That can’t be true.. in mus be something like 1972.. How would I check that ?

I love Vermont.. I lve that ther eare no mosquitos r black flies at this point in the year.. I love that it will be 43 degrees tomorrw then 7 degrees the next morning.. what a cool and differnt place
