Saturday night – family

Greetings from sherborn mass .
Diane and I are down visiting my folks for the weekend. We came down this morning through politically charged new Hampshire where every bridge had a bed sheet hanging from it adorned with Ron paul slogans
First stop in the Boston area was to visit our niece Elizabeth, her mate Chris and their 18 month old very cute daughter Emma . Elizabeth is dianes brother steves middle daughter. It was so great seeing them enjoying the whole young family thing . We played with Emma then all walked to a nearby place for lunch.

From there we headed out to sherborn to be with my folks . Weve had a really nice and quiet afternoon and evening with them. Its good hanging out with them. We spend a large portion of our time chewing on stories from our collective pasts which is fun and interesting. We spent some time chewing on sushi as well.

Friday night – salon

I had the quintessential Vermont ‘salon’ night.. salon not as in living room.. but a in when a bunch of smart, passionate and creative people get together to share ideas and eat and drink too much.  The whole idea of ‘salon’s has fascinated me since i read about the Algonguin salon where folks like dorothy parker sat around and drank martinis and talked art and writing and politics…

Tonight it wasn’t art and writing and politics.. it was computer hacking, making and then art.. with some science and politics thrown in. Fist stop was the monthly 2600 hackers club meeting.. I hadn’t been in months.. but it was so good seeing the guys.. our group is getting ready to move to a new space.. Our hope is to have some gear set up to share stories and techniques.. Tonight we even talked about doing some student outreach.. there’s no better way to win a kid over to geekdom than teaching them a bit of the ‘dark arts’ . We had a surprise visit from Jeff,  a representative from SparkFun , my favorite geek warz emporium. Jeff is crisscrossing the country reaching out to Makerspaces trying to figure out how SParkfun can help. He was like Santa.. I got some great geek shwag.. (4 cool  802.15.4 transceivers, an mpg shield and midi shield for arduino and an lilypad vibrating motor.. how sweet is that ?

After that meeting.. I headed over to the Flyndog gallery to see the opening of friends Homer, Chris and Ethan. I was SOOOO proud of all of them.. Homer had his metal paintings including some of the motorized ones i helped him with.

Ethan had made a piece on site that was one strip of aluminum.. it was really elegant.

And chris had his wonderful steampunk stuff there..  including the urinal

the shower (chis’s beautiful wife kim not included)

the jetpack

and my personal fave.. the sub (i helped with the lights)

It was a great scene there.. I saw many folks from different corners of my life.. and had soem great conversations.  i was really glad I was there to be there for this

OK.. gotta sleep now. .More tomorrow..

Thursday night – satori at 4

Happy birthday satori mariano cohn. Our puppy is now a four year old woman dog. She was just a tiny black furball when we got her in 2008. Now Shes a midsize black furball. Her name satori means sudden enlightenment . I think it fits her pretty well as she seems to be amazed by everything she sees. Shes always ready to play… Even at 3 am when she wakes us to go outside her favorite pastime is teasing her big sister chai…who has a generally calmer and quieter disposition
Its really wonderful sharing the house with a different species . Those girls are always reminding me to enjoy the worlds real and simple pleasures … A run in the woods., a nap by the warm fire , a scratch behind the ear, a full belly. Thanks for that

Wednesday night – geek night

Busy evening..  after a really full day at work, left work around 5 for an unplanned trip to Homer’s to reprogram the delay units I’d made for his mechanized metal paintings .  I’d finished them last night.. fried all three of them with a bad power supply early this morning, rebuilt them.. homer picked them up at my house before work .. only to find that I’d miscoded the delays by a factor of ten (3 seconds where homer wanted 30).. Rather than dictating the code changes by phone.. I fugured it was easier for us both for me just to drive there and back (50 miles) for 3 minutes of code update.. not necessarily efficient.. but artists need to suffer.. don’t they ?

here’s one of my delay elements winking at me…

here’s homer getting ready to wire them in..

These photos don’t do the metal paintings justice.. they’re really beautiful.. you should come down to the Flynndog gallery on Friday for the opening and see them.

I got home a bit late… friend Seth was already at the house waiting for me with his friend Vinnie from work. They’re both Interns at Microstrain. Seth has been working with me since he was in high school.. he’s a very good electronics hacker…

Diane had made a delicious fish taco dinner.. so we all dug in.. just  as we finished, my buddy John showed up.. he’s working with me on a music project i’m very excited about.. the four of us spent a few great hours geeking out..and talking shop . I managed to con Seth and Vinnie to help me figure out the last component of the  smoke machine setup for friend   Chris’s  Steampunk jetpack at the Fylnndog . Te challenge was to add a circuit that determined if the smoke machine as up to temperature to prevent misfires… the challenge was the crcuit had to be completely electrically isolated from the cheaply made smoke machine to prevent an electrical disaster (like the on I caused wiht smoke machine number 1.. ugh) .After a little fiddling we all came up with a great scheme: we taped (yes taped) a CdS (cadmium sulfide) photocell to the stupid light up switch on the unit. which shifts resistance when the ready light is either off or on.. Voila ! The lab was full of smoke.. just as it was supposed to be !
