Monday night – snakes on a boat

Home again, home again. Jiggidy jig. Just back from a whirlwind trip to ny to drop diane off, then a quick visit to see my folks in boston where i had a work meeting today. It was greT getting to hang out with my parents.. Its nice having them this close…

Pretty uneventful drive home.. I spent some of it listening to the radio… I was really struck by two pieces i heard.

First was a piece on the 50th anniversary of then Alabama Governor George Wallace’s 1963 inauguration speech where he said “segregation now, segregation, tomorrow , .. Segregation forever” .even though Wallace lived long enough to reform his thinking and regret those words , It was hard to hear that hatred distilled into words by a person in power in our lifetime.

The second piece was about the increase in gun sales following obamas reelection.. And then the huge further uptick in sales after the newtown tragedy. The greatest increase was in the sales of the semiautomatic ‘assault’ type weapons used in that event. I was stunned by this.. I guess its human nature to hoard what is likely to be scarce.. But this somehow seems like an insult to the memory of the victims of that and related tragedies..

Those pieces but me in a somber mood… Luckily i was met by happy news just before i got home.. Diane called from NY to report that Max’s snake had shown up after being lost for more than a month. The day of hurricane sandy, the three foot milk snake escaped its cage and disappeared into the hull of the boat. Today is showed up coiled around the bed in a different room to the surprise of that rooms occupant and to maxs delight

Heres a picture of the snake from before .. I understand its in good shape .. A little skinny and cold, but otherwise happy to be back among humans…

Ok.. Early day tomorrow.. So i’ll sign off now…

Sunday night – folks home

Hello from sherborne. Im at my folks having a really nice and quiet day,,
I left the boat around 8 this morning after a great short visit with max and jac on the boat. Diane will be staying with them for more than a week while at a yoga training. I’ll be so great for her to spend that time with max and jac…
A i was leaving, diane and i were marveling at the rag and scrap paper business next door

Then i had a peaceful and quick drive from nyc to sherborne…before i knew it i was with my folks…

We spent the day hanging o ut and walking at the nearby horticultural institute. I was a foggy and warm day as we walked along the Charles river.. Hardly anybody else was around due to the drizzly weather. I was great…

Then back to the house.. My dad and i reenacted a ritual from my youth. We watched a football game and i pretended to be interested. I remember drinking beer underage as we did”. Tonight was interesting because one of the teams was from our home town of Houston.. And the other team was the patriots from near here.. Our loyalties would be stretched if either of us cared.

You can tell were not big fans because mid game we turned it off and headed out to eat sushi.. Yum !

Now we’re sitting down watching something called Downtown Abbey. I’ve heard of the show… But never seen … Its Beautifully made ..lush and kind of boring.. Just the way i like it..

Ok.. Now to watch this show… I think i like it.

Friday night – stampmobile

Very busy day at work.. I was glad when late afternoon rolled around. Id reserved some time to go work on bens crazy stampmobile. ( You can see it by googling “wired stampmobile”) He’s building it to call attention to the terrible impact that money – particularly corporate money – has on politics. You can see the thing in action by Googling “wired stampmobile” . It s a beautiful rube goldberg like contraption that takes a persons dollar and takes it on a an amazing roller coaster ride of dips and twirls .. Then stamps it with a slogan.. Like ” this money is not for bribing politicians” before giving it back to you.

The machine was built by a guy in California.. While the mechanics are beautiful and ingenious, the control electronics are not… So friends colin. Seth and john are working with me to redo them. We’ve made great progress.. But its not finished yet.. Hope to get there soon… Its been fun working on such a a cool concept. And, to my mind.. Such a. Good cause..

Ok.. Gotta sleep..
