Monday night – the bendulum

On my way down to Armonk I stopped in to see my friends Dave and Jean.
. I always love stopping there not just because they're wonderful people… But because Dave is always up to something interesting and new. Today was no exception. I got my first look at Dave's masterpiece: the bendulum . It's a completely custom designed clock that uses a upside down pendulum which is a flexing piece of steel. Hence 'bendulum' the timing is set by the period of the flexing metal. Just like in a pendulum but upside down. A sensor gives the pendulum a quick kick every time it flexes through the center to keep it moving. It's a very simple and elegant circuit. Dave designed the movement, clock face and the case which was built by a friend. It's really a work of art.

Speaking of works of art, David and Jean are also part of a project to help restore that we damaged photographs from the actual disasters. For example they were down in New Jersey helping people Collect and repair precious photographs that were damaged by hurricane sandy.

It's a crowd sourced effort with hundreds of volunteers. The volunteers professionally photographthe damaged Photosm and then use sophisticated Photoshop techniques to repair them. Dave is quite a master at this.m Look at these before and after's

It was really nice spending time with Dave and Jean. David is one of my most trusted mentors though he hasn't been at Ibm for many years.

Come to think of it, I also had a nice, short conversation with one of my other trusted mentors, Kevin, today. It's always nice to go in for a checkup.

Whoops it's late again… I need to go to sleep.

big presentation Tomorrow wish me luck.

Sunday night – Cloud atlas

just past midnight.. and i’m about to go pick up gabe at the airport. He’s been in Spain all week.. can’t wait to hear his stories..   while he was gone, Diane and I had our own summer camp.. she went with me on a business trip, we ate out a few times.. we hung out in the pool and we watched movies.. it was awesome.. (she’s awesome)

last night we watched the movie ‘Cloud Atlas’ .. it was 3 hours long and was based on the book of the same name by David Mitchel.. It was amazingly complicated and twisted. 6 different actors each play 6 different characters through six different story lines in six different times..

ca

It was beautifully photographed. and The musical score was great. .. parts of it were amazing story telling, parts of it were pretty goofy..and no tas well made.  .. . The story kept folding back on itself like batter in a mixing bowl. By the end, all the stories concluded.. and you came away feeling good- Cloud-Atlas-Whos-Who

the strange thing is that I can’t get the story lines or the characters out of my head today.. i keep trying to figure out connections between the stories.. and who played who..  i would like to see it again.. but can’t imagine sitting still for another 3 hours..

hugh

The one thing I really liked abotu the movie is how it showed a clique of people travelign through time together, taking differnt roles in differnt stories.. soemhow.. i don’t think thas far from the truth.. I like the ones I’m with.. 🙂

We made our own cloud atlas  today.. we went to the new sandy beach at the intersection of the huntington and winooski rivers.. All the sand was dropped by the storms over the last three weeks.. It used to be deep river there.. It’s a perfect place to lie out and catch soem son.. and it’s only about 400 feet from our front door..
