My brother Billy and 4 of his kids and my sister and her three kids are here as well.. Mary’s husband John will be joining later in the week. Billy’s wife Shuan and son Chris can’t make it because of school stuff for Chris..

We spent the afternoon bonding with the nieces, nephews and cousins we don’t see very often..   Gabe hung out with cousins Theo

Saturday night – harvest

Enjoying our first day back in Vermont… The air is thick and sweet… So are the mosquitoes .

i didn't do much today other than readjust. Managed to cut the grass, a job I try to avoid doing as much as possible. There was a pleasure talking myself do something that I didn't like.

One high point of the day was the first tomato sandwich of the year… Our garden is full of tomatoes of every color red yellow green even purple… And even some jalapenos… I love this time of year.

Friday night – Into thick air

On our way home from a truly wonderful family vacation in Durango Colorado. It was one of the more grown-up vacations I've ever taken. The 6 of us (Diane. Max, Jac, Gabe and Raya and I) spent the week in a rented house, with a rented car and ate rented food… We packed a ton of stuff into each day … lots of it outdoors. We hiked, ran, rafted/kayaked and visited ruins ate well… slept well and just enjoyed hanging out.. We had an 80 inch TV in the house.. and it only got turned on twice.

. I felt like a middle aged couple on vacation with their grown up kids….

…and….. well…. I guess we are . and I'm grateful for that..

We're not flying back to BTV to rejoin the working world.. thanks to the duel miracle and cusrse of airborne wireless I've spent the last 4 hours transforming the vague dread of wondering what I've missed at work in the past week to the vague dread of knowing what I've missed.. not a bad bargain.. As I know.. the world turns fine without us..

I'm really looking forward to breathing at 300 feet above sea level.. this past week we've spent at about 9000 feet.. with a few ventures to 10,000… there just weren't enough air molecules to go around for my tastes.. Running actually felt like I was trying to get exercise instead of the mindless and pretty effortless thing I'm used to.. Water boiled in funny ways, cakes came out flat and my brain felt like I had an icepick in it for about half of our visit..

but it was a nice icepick and grew to love it like the rest of our vacation.

I'm looking forward to having air that you need to claw your way through… air you can taste !

i'm also really looking forward to seeing our Dogs.. I miss them so much when we travel.. People you can call.. but withdogs you need to smell one another…

OK.. gotta get back to my mound of email.. and we'll be landing soon.. I can feel the plane already dipping towards responsibility..

Thursday night – Last day in Colorado, Dads birthday

Let me start by saying happy 83rd brithday to my Papa… Happy Birthday Hugh Karl Cohn.. We all love you very much !.. See you next week ! Mom sent this pic

We began our last full day here in Colorado with the intention of taking it easy.. as it happened, that didn't work out.. Diane began by making an excellent breakfast of home made chocolate sourdough bread and asparagus fritata . She brought the sourdough starter in our luggage.. how cool is that ?

When I woke up i found diane sitting by the window watching a cow nurse her calf abut 2 feet from our kitchen window.. makes it feel very homey.IMG_3141

We decided to take a 'short' hike…that didn't require much driving.. we went down 2 miles to the cascade falls trail we'd walked earlier and decided to try it again.. this time we kept going in search of the falls..

we made it to the first set of falls.. a double.. in about 3 hours.. all in all we were out there 6 hours ! There's an even prettier 50 foot falls about 3/4 miles further.. but we were already way past our time.. so we headed back. it was a really nice hike.. pretty flat.. some meadows.. lots of flies and mosquitoes.. the first we've really seen on our trip. Gabe and I jsumped in and put a samstone behind the falls.. I'll try to get picture of that from Gabes gopro at some point. IMG_3201

It was about 5:30 when we got home.. too late to go out again.. though we'd wanted to go hear rusty's band..

we all got busy packign tc because we have to leave very early tomorrow morning..

One major project remained. and that was to launch the glider that gabe and I had made out of a few bucks worth of styrofoam sheet from Home depot .. We cut it out using a pocket knife and put it together using tie wraps and duct tape.. We used a broken fiberglass rod for bracing.. The first few flights were disaster due to balance and wing position.. but a little fiddling and some extra weight.. in the form of 2 sam stones had it flying pretty straight if not that far..

IMG_3247

IMG_3246

Once we had that working, we added Gabe's gopro.. it wighted a ton.. but still flew pretty well !

The videos from the gopro are amazing.. gabe will post them when we get back to vermont.. .. very cool !

Max phoographhed the whole thing and also managed ot get some time lapse of the suns etting.. I'll post that when I see it too..

then we had a feast of all of our leftovers… and took soem pics of this very fine house..

now we're all beat.. We need to wake in a few hours to get going..

this has been a wonderful trip..

more from the road tomorrow

note all, nite sam
