Wednesday night – fun at airports

I had a couple of hours this evening of hanging out at. Newark airport. Most of it i put to very good use because i spent it with my good friend and colleague dave l who was traveling back to England. We spend a solid couple of hours talking about work, life, work-life, friends, work friends ,and life-friends ( covered the whole set,i think).

I had about 30 minutes of my own after we both had to run for our plane sand i put them to very good use.first i realized that when you are in an airport train car with no one else in it,you can get away with doing whatever you want..to whit:

I also realize, while sitting on this plane awaiting take off, that the reflection of my iPad screen in the grime  from the windows (and, i suspect a polarizing filter) made a pretty decent reflective polarascope. Polarascopes are used to show stress in things like plastic or glass…. Light passes between two polarizing filters and the material under stress, the stressed arias rotate the phases of the light proportional tot he stress, and that is rendered in a visible color.. Check out what i saw when i looked at the reflection. Of my iPad in the planes window.

Here its just showing stress in me waiting to get off the ground and get back to sweet Vermont .

Hey.. I think i see a face in there width=500

It just shows that its good to be able to entertain one’s self while traveling..no?

Tuesday night – anything but the colony

In new jersey at a client meeting. Really good set of technical meetings, and good conversation at dinner… somehow, however, the topic of the colony comes up. I didn't bring it up. A friend of mine at dinner did .

My New Year's resolution is to move beyond the colony. Not that I didn't love it, not that it wasn't valuable, not that it doesn't bring great memories with it… It's just that My life is not defined by 59 days of poor diet and poor hygiene five years ago.

I seem to have trouble avoiding it. Though. When I start talking about it, I have trouble stopping. Out come the same stories. The same questions, It's almost an addiction.

Is there a colonists anonymous?

I think I need another adventure to chase that one out of my head. Any suggestions?

Monday night – Andrews farm fire

We woke this morning to an automated phone call from the school telling us that the school buses couldn't get through on route 2 between Jonesville and Richmond. I was confused at first because the same route had been closed yesterday because of flooding. it turned out there had been a major fire at the Andrews Farm barn right near Richmond. It had burned to the ground. The blaze started around 5 AM and was reported by someone driving by. By the time the fire department got there the barn was totally engulfed and was a total loss. Thankfully, no one or no animals were injured in the blaze.

It's a really sad when we lose a historic building like that. The barn was currently being used for food processing. But for many years it was a working farm owned by Mary Jo and Everett Andrews. Both of them passed away in the last 10 years or so. They were great couple. I remember Mary Jo showing up at our house to talk about the archaeological finds that came out when they built the bridge across a Huntington River near our house. She was very interested in history and talked about the bear bones and pottery that was found within hundred yards of our house back in the 80s.

Sure who owns the Andrews farm now but I'm sorry for their loss. It makes me sad to see things like this go… It's impermanence… It's entropy i guess.

Sunday night – January thaw

We are in the middle of the January thaw. I t happens nearly every year, temperatures jump above freezing, the snow melts and things flood.. but this year, there’s note really much snow.. just ice.. It’s been near 40 degrees out ( a real heat spell for this time of year !) Actually.. it’s kind of nice to get the ice to melt.. it’s 3 inches think in places on roads, sidewalks,etc.. It’s as hard as concrete.. so the only thing to do is to wait for it to thaw.. and thaw it did !

The runoff and the rain we had have created some chaos.  The Barlows field is now a lake

Their road is a skating rink

Our back  yard is a lake as well

The river is way out of its banks.. here’s the woods across the street from us.

Upstream of the bridge rive itself is an ice jam about a half mile long. (literally, i ran it) . Well not really a jam.. as water is still flowing underneath

down stream of our bridge, the winooski is pretty clear.

u

route 2 was closed all morning. Cochran and duxbury roads were down to one lane

Route 2 was really messy

the water was a couple of foot deep

I went for a few miles run to chek out the flooding. spied this guy lookign surprised.. and maybe a bit mad !

Our back yard lake was pretty deep as well… I couldn’t resist taking our funky 2 man kayak out in it..

I love this place.. nature enjoys making us crazy 🙂
