Sunday night – road not taken

Diane and I decided to address cabin fever head on by heading in to the woods. We started on bolton notch road.. undecided whether we would ‘just’ do the preston pond loop.. or make the 5 mile up and down back to our house. we were enjoying the fresh tracks of being the only folks out on the trail in the new snow.. When we came to the intersection of preston pond trail and saw the heavily walked trail, we opted for the more remote .. and much longer and steeper walk home. Made me think of Robert frost..

The Road Not Taken

BY ROBERT FROST

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

it was tough going up there.. many trees down which made following the blazes  hard.. and made the walking kind of treacherous.. didn’t impede me from making a beautiful naked snow angel !. (don’t worry. tasteful pictures)

The scenery was beautiful.. and the weather was great.. temps rising until rain in the afternoon.. y the time we got back it was near freezing.. which is pretty darn warm for this time of year.. . we’d long since shed our coats

now its raining.. (yuck)..wishing for a changeover to snow..

more tomorrow.

Saturday night – stir crazy

Now into a second week of frigid cold and not much snow. Too cold to take the dogs out for a run… Not enough snow for snowshoeing. We're all going bonkers. Luckily we had some good social time today. Our friends Dan and Sara came by for lunch. Great talks about life and the private parts of spiders. Sarah's longtime mentor, an expert in spiders, passed away recently and we are trying to find a way of creating musical instruments that mimic the mating sounds of spiders for his memorial. Should be cool.

Later today we went to our friends Igor and Katherine's…

Again it was really nice getting out. We had great discussions, nice food and after dinner science with Stephan and Anna.

Ever see what you can do with a bowl of milk, some food coloring, and a little soap? You put dots of food coloring in the steel pool of milk. And then you let a little of the soap slide down the edge of the bowl. When it hits the milk it destroys the surface tension . This causes that dyes to move around really dynamically. Very cool

Ok.. Time for bed.. More tomorrow.

Friday night – Kabal

Went to an interesting meeting tonight at Chris and Kim’s .. it was an interesting gathering of makers, musicians, brewers and freaks all there to plan the 2015 Summer Solstice Celsius burn. We talked about what had gone well and not so well at the winter solstice burn .. then planned for the future.. Summer is going to be 2.5 days of craziness.. it’s gonna be good

the meeting was very well run.. short of Robert’s rules we could have been planning a church bake sale or something.. not 2.5 days of crazy pyrotechnics and merely making..

but eventually, the serious got to us.. so we all did what came natural to us all.. we went outside and burned something 🙂

great way to start a weekend !
