Monday night – Word of the day

I’m a long time subscriber to Anu Garg’s wonderful ‘Word of the Day’ blog.. Every day I either learn a new word or feel smug for knowing it already.. both are pleasurable sensations 🙂

Todays word was a treat.. It’s the name of our younger Dog Satori…

Satori.. means sudden enlightenment..

great name for a cute and loving dog

great way to start the day !

A.Word.A.Day

with Anu Garg

The writer H.L. Mencken once said, “A living language is like a man suffering incessantly from small hemorrhages, and what it needs above all else is constant transactions of new blood from other tongues. The day the gates go up, that day it begins to die.”

He might as well be talking about a community, a culture, or a country.

The reason English is such a rich language is that it’s not afraid to adopt words from other places. It has welcomed words from everywhere. If you speak English, you know parts of at least a hundred different languages.

This week we’ll see five words that came to English from Japanese, Arabic, Spanish, Hindi, and Italian.

satori

PRONUNCIATION:
(suh-TOR-ee)

MEANING:
noun: Sudden enlightenment or intuitive understanding.

ETYMOLOGY:
From Japanese satori (understanding), from satoru (to know or understand). Earliest documented use: 1727.

USAGE:
“Twenty years later, Michael Okun’s enthusiasm is fresh as he describes his neurological satori. ‘A lot of people were saying all these pathways and everything are really complicated, and they just wanted to get through the class and get a grade. But to me it made perfect sense.’”
David Noonan; Mind Craft; Smithsonian; May 2014.

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY:

Be kind to thy father, for when thou wert young, / Who loved thee so fondly as he? / He caught the first accents that fell from thy tongue, / And joined in thy innocent glee. -Margaret Courtney, poet (1822-1862)

Sunday night – not so special

I finished the “Subtle art of not giving a F…..” that i was talking about the other night. The writing is a little hard to take in places.. every 5th word is.. .. well guess..
but the messages are for the most part right on. I took away quite a few good nuggets..

One that really struck me today was the message that we are all not so special.. Manson makes the point that whether we think we’re the best or the worst..

we’re probably wrong..

He argues that when we complain about our problems.. we project that our problems are somehow ‘special’ .. and worse than others’ problems.. . When we imply our problems are worse than others.. its our egos bragging about how bad we suck. .. or our lives suck.. or whatever.. Doing that minimimizes what others might be feeling.

That struck me.. because I realize that I often use this blog to whine about how busy I am, how tired I am.. etc.

I think he’s right..
i know that you are all busy too !

sorry about that folks.. wasnt my intention

nite all. nite sam
