Saturday night – Pittsburgh

I didn’t write last night because I didn’t know what to say… We watched coverage of the horrible shooting in Pittsburgh yesterday. Tree of life is a congregation I know well. We have many friends who went there when we lived in Pittsburgh. My heart goes out to those people there today… what to say ?!

I was shocked to see our friend Mikael Eisenberg being interviewed on all the news channels. Michael was the past president of tree of life. He and his wife and daughter were also in our small baby group when we first moved to Pittsburgh… We haven’t stayed in touch really… But it was so strange to have that personal connection to something that otherwise seems just abstract and horrible.

What is happening to us?… What in our culture is causing all of these things to happen? Can it really be that Trump has set such a divisive tone for the country that allows …maybe even invites hatred…. thats surely part of it.. but I think hes more of a symptom than the lone cause

One thing that is certain..we need to change the path were on.. with the elections only a week away.. we need to vote to turn our country back to inclusion and compassion.. we need to show up and turn back hatred

Friday night – Michael’s thesis

Dianne and I are just back from watching our friend Mikael’s masters defense. He has a self design major… And it’s interesting stuff. It’s a whole story of his self discovery called. “The neuroscience of purpose: creating a life worth living”. He did a really nice job of describing his own personal journey and what he’s learned. And then had a great interactive discussion with the audience there. It was so much fun.

It was an amazing active putting himself “out there”… And it paid off. My hat is off to him.

Thursday night – lunch

Busy day today… Took a break at lunch to meet with my friend Jon. I ran into him at maker fair after not seeing him for many months. I was very sad to learn that his wife Gina had suddenly passed away. This after his son Jeremy died about two years ago. John is an amazingly upbeat guy and I wanted to check in on him and see how you was doing. We had a great discussion at lunch about life, love, fate… And making things. He’s a great project manager and he’s looking for work here in Burlington. I’m trying to find a way to connect people with project management skills to people with making skills… I’ve learned that the people who are best at making things or not generally the best at organizing things and vice versa.

Here’s to healing through making!

Wednesday night – Paul’s talk

Had a great day at Mit at the media lab. Really inspired by many of the talks that I heard. It’s really great to hear so many people thinking so hard about so many important things. Lots of focus on the spread of ideas… Good ideas and bad ideas. Interesting to see how pervasive the use of AI is in these important studies.

This afternoon Dianne and I drove home in time to catch my good friend Paul Stok at generator. He talked about the intersection of art and money… He’s good at making both. Really interesting insights… One great Takeaway for me was that when you are convinced and idea is good space and time and the earth itself will bend to your will. It’s funny to hear that coming from him because I know him to be a guy who worries a lot… I think that intersection of worry and certainty a really interesting and positive

After the standing room only talk…, Paul , Ryann (Paul Ryan?!), Ken, Diane and I went to arts riot. They were doing this crazy showing of the movie “the shining”… With no sound but a band playing. It was very cool and creepy. It started to get too scary for me so we went and sat in the bar for a bit

OK… Time for me to get some sleep. More tomorrow
