Thursday night – data center

Dianne and I had a really good time in Cambridge. It’s so much nicer when she gets to come along.

We took advantage of a little extra time in our commute to stop at the Massachusetts green high-performance computer center in Holyoke Massachusetts… About an hour and a half west of Boston. This is where a lot of the computing for MIT happens. I’ve always wanted to see it. It’s built in an old mill town that has seen better days. As a result there’s lots of Hydro power and real estate is really cheap.… A good recipe for a good data center. I met Chris and John and they gave me the Cook’s tour of the place. It is such a cool place… You literally could eat off the floors… Or sleep on them. As I attempted to do

Very nice to see where some of our bits are massaged…

Drive home was a little rough as the rain turned to snow. Glad to be home.

Tuesday night – tunnels

Very busy day here in Cambridge… I actually didn’t even have time for lunch lovely Diane brought me over some food. It’s so nice when she gets to travel with me

I did get to go over and see the new office space for the Mit QY bridge. It was so great getting our own space. Here’s Josh the proud leader showing us around

Afterwords Diane and I went to legal Sea Food because she really wanted to try lobster. It had been at least 20 years and I didn’t know lobster… It was fun and kind a weird

After dinner I took Diane into the basement tunnels under building 66 to see the interactive art. It’s great they are VR stuff that I had seen last night with Hendrik. It’s really amazing

Since we were down there we spent a good 40 minutes exploring the tunnels under Mit and went all the way over to mass Avenue. I haven’t been down there in 40 years and now with the Internet it was easier to navigate. We saw all sorts of amazing things including a blacksmithing shop a Glashop a bunch of radioactive stuff very very cool and mysterious. And hardly anyone down there at all.

OK that is it time for bed. Tomorrow is another day… (what a weird expression)

Monday night – the other generator

Hello from a very cold and windy Cambridge. It’s above zero but really strong winds… It feels like it’s probably a 20 below zero wind chill. I understand it’s even much colder at home. Diane and I are down here for a couple of days. The drive down was really tough. The roads were not very well cleared because of the cold weather and blowing snow. There were many accidents.

It took us over 5 1/2 hours to get down which is two hours longer than usual.

Tonight I helped host a meeting of “the generator”… It’s a January term group that meets to talk about their independent AI based projects. We were the sponsors at tonight’s meeting. Attendance was on the lower side because of the really crazy weather… But even so we had a great quorum and our panel in the generator members had a really good time.

We all went out afterwards for a nice dinner. On the way Hendrik showed us some wonderful pictures in one of the many basement tunnels that connect all the buildings here. They were all in Hanst with augmented reality using an app on your phone. It was really amazing

The guy next to us in our Airbnb is smoking a whole lot of high-quality pot… I think we’re getting off just being next-door.

So it’s off to dreamland…
