Wednesday nite – JEK

On man day one of my oldest ibm friends and mentors John K retired after 40 years at ibm . John was an executive VP when he retired but I remember him when he was a 2nd line manager in Fishkill . I’ve worked somewhere under him in one capacity or another for more than 25 years .. he was a great mentor to me and many other technical folks at ibm. He was kind I’d like The Godfather for the technical leadership . When Sam died .. Jom sent his plan down to pick up our family in Florida .. and .. then showed up at Sams memorial at our house .. I’ll never forget that.

There was a nice virtual tribute to john on Monday . Our svp Dario has put together a really nice program . Our CEO Arvind spoke , as did our former CEO Ginni . Lots of Johns friends and associates from the industry sent video tributes too. It was inspiring to hear from all these folks about how they viewed john and his accomplishments..

In the end Dario gave john some nice tributes including A version of the first chip he worked on include and the final chip it was built under his watch. There’s also given a beautiful scale model of a The IBM Watson jeopardy set and a scale model of aquantum computer.

John made some nice comments Thanking everyone… And especially his wife Honey joe

It was a great ceremony… And really touching. I felt a little sad that more people could be there in person… On the other hand I think so many people from the company dialed in but it was probably more than I could ever have been accommodated in any room

I left the session feeling inspired and a little sad… It’s definitely the end of era

We’ll miss you John… Have fun in your next adventures

Tuesday night – Mental floss

I had a big day today… I got to go to the dentist!… Is days having any legitimate excuse to be out of the house and see people. Essex family dental is a great place for an outing… Everybody was already covered head to foot in personal protection equipment… It was super relaxing to sit down and get cleaned.… I hadn’t realized it but it had been over a year since I’ve been.… Another impact of the pandemic. As weird as it sounds, It was quite cathartic getting The last year scraped off of me.

Interesting end of the day… An old friend don whom I have barely spoken with in the last 40 years reached out to me. We just talked for a couple of hours and I’ve only begun to scratch the surface all the time and changes.… I like doing that sort of Mutual personal archaeology

Looking forward to our next conversation

Monday night – old pics

Diane and I are taking on a big project. We’re trying to centralize and back up all of our photos and videos including the 35 mm pictures we have in boxes all over the house. We’ve got ourselves a good photo scanner and a whole lot of storage and we are currently uploading everything to google photos… So far so good. We’ve already got 125,000 pictures up there. Diane’s now the part about scanning the 35 mm ones… And she’s turning up some wonderful pictures. Some of these are so funny… Summer really bitter sweet.… I love them all

My 3 boys !

Chai baby !

Chocolate cake !

Liquid nitrogen and no goggles or gloves. Uh-oh

Nite all, nite Sam .. nice seeing you here

Sunday night – fan mail

I called and bright day here. Stay in and I got out for a quick ski down the rivershore which was really beautiful. It was great being out in the sunshine and making a little bit of vitamin D

Basically puttered around the house today… Got some stuff done… But everything we wished. One thing that we did get results over the weekend was the “great fan mystery”… On Friday diane and I replaced all the groups in the ceiling fans because the old ones didn’t quite fit the new Wi-Fi controlled Lightbulbs We’re using . When I went to put on the first one I noticed that One of the fan blades was badly twisted.… The funny thing is the twist was not that a parent from the ground. You had to be looking at it from my level on a ladder as I was. One of The metal brackets that hold the wooden fan blades had been twisted a good 20°.

It was such a mystery. Explain why the fan was wobbly.… But how could this have happened? Something would’ve had to hit it with a great deal of force. Our mind quickly went to some sort of kid driven accident 20 or more years ago but we never learned of. I put it out to the kids that we were trying to get to the bottom of the street Mistry and whatever had happened the statute of limitations had expired.…

Sure Enough yesterday we heard from GabÉ that there was an incident bringing down one of the foldable mattresses that we used for sleepovers down the stairs. Somehow it had managed to jump from the stairs to the fan. GabÉ didn’t think that it had caused any damage… It must’ve been 15 years ago-

He came clean… And it’s too late to ground him… So we all had a good laugh

Nice to have the Mystery solved !

Believe it or not I was actually able to find the exact bracket on eBay that someone must’ve taken off of an old fan. It’ll be fun replacing it and keeping the old one is the trophy
