Friday night – early hike for Sam

We woke today to a weather report Head today would be partly cloudy but tomorrow would be rainy. Tomorrow we will mark what would’ve been sam’s 30th birthday… Really a remarkable milestone… So different than what we might have imagined.

We North Mark Sam’s birthdays… And his death day with a hike and then a potluck here at home. But with Covid still moving quickly to the community we decided that wasn’t a good idea this year. Instead Dianne and I had planned to hike camels hump… One of Sam’s favorite hikes. Given the better weather today, we decided to go today rather than brave the rain tomorrow

… It was a great hike up… With plenty of Sam stones to spread around…

It was a perfect way o to honor our son.. he loved fun.. he loved the ourdoors and he loved us..

Thursday night – Memorial day panel

Quiet day. one interesting thing today was a a panel in our company-wide seminar  “Beta bytes if  knowledge”… It’s a companywide seminar on things of general interest. Today we had a panel of some of our veterans members talking about Memorial Day and service member friends  that they had lost. It was very moving..

I appreciate everyone who told their stories. Thanking about a story that my friend Eren told at our burning man seminar a couple of weeks ago where one of his friends to meet served with an Afghanistan and killed himself… And it wasn’t until Aaron  went to the temple at burning man and wrote a letter to his dead friend.. that  he was able to get closure

Thinking of all who have fallen with Memorial day coming this weekend

Wednesday night – in orbit

I was heading back from the dentist  morning when I got a text message from my good friend Naeem.   He let me know that today was a big day for us.

Naeem is my favorite space freak… He’s been working very hard with a group from Bulgaria to build a small “cube sat” satellite which will be an orbit for the next three or so years. He’s going to be using it for cloud computing from space experiments. So cool

And when Naeem told me about the project I mentioned how much I would love to get a samstone in orbit. (There was already one in space.. but not in orbit  see http://samstones.org/WordPress1/?p=1827)
We explored different options but it turns out that the satellites are very space and weight constraint so instead of putting a real Sam stone on it I created an image from a 3-D scan of a real stone and gave it to the manufactures. They etched into the side of one of the struts inside the small satellite.

Anyway.. Naeem was told that the space launch was today. 2 PM specifically… And then the satellite itself would be deployed around 2:30. Here’s a picture of it…

Heres a video Naeem sent me of the actual deployment into orbit

Sam is now in orbit!

Tuesday night – first swim

It was a beautiful night when I got home from work.. diane and I walked back up dugway .. …we went to the lower gorge…and I couldn’t resist goign in.. the water was in the 40s.. but… well.. liquid enough to swim in..
