Monday night – the bendulum

On my way down to Armonk I stopped in to see my friends Dave and Jean.
. I always love stopping there not just because they're wonderful people… But because Dave is always up to something interesting and new. Today was no exception. I got my first look at Dave's masterpiece: the bendulum . It's a completely custom designed clock that uses a upside down pendulum which is a flexing piece of steel. Hence 'bendulum' the timing is set by the period of the flexing metal. Just like in a pendulum but upside down. A sensor gives the pendulum a quick kick every time it flexes through the center to keep it moving. It's a very simple and elegant circuit. Dave designed the movement, clock face and the case which was built by a friend. It's really a work of art.

Speaking of works of art, David and Jean are also part of a project to help restore that we damaged photographs from the actual disasters. For example they were down in New Jersey helping people Collect and repair precious photographs that were damaged by hurricane sandy.

It's a crowd sourced effort with hundreds of volunteers. The volunteers professionally photographthe damaged Photosm and then use sophisticated Photoshop techniques to repair them. Dave is quite a master at this.m Look at these before and after's

It was really nice spending time with Dave and Jean. David is one of my most trusted mentors though he hasn't been at Ibm for many years.

Come to think of it, I also had a nice, short conversation with one of my other trusted mentors, Kevin, today. It's always nice to go in for a checkup.

Whoops it's late again… I need to go to sleep.

big presentation Tomorrow wish me luck.
