Saturday night – ahhhhhhhhh

Ahhhhhhh.. today was wonderfully relaxing… i really needed a day to unwind and I got it !..   I went for an early run with the dogs.. Then  Diane, Gabe and I went off to his frist igh school soccer game..   This one was at CVU.. It was a great day for watching a game. The heat had broken and it was cool and dry. and breezy. Gabe got one of the goals… and they won the game.. good start for the year..

Gabe had to leave after the first game to get to work. We dropped him at Mexicali’s then picked up Hannah and took her back to our house to meet her dad. Today is the day Hannah leaves for college in Montreal..

It was a little hard saying goodbye to her.. having her living with us on and off for the past month was great bait.. we had so many kids hanging around the house.. we loved it.  We’ll miss them all. .at the same time, we’re really excited for all of them to be goign off to school and into the world.

From thee we went to Marci’s om, Sharon’s house in Huntington for Marci’s birthday party

Sharon put out a real feast

.. It was a great party.. mostly family. It was nice to meet all the folks that helped make Marci so nice.

Lots of cute kids around to help with the important stuff.. liek blowing out candles.

We got back to the house around 4:30 in time to meet Dom and Hannah. We ‘met’ them in a taco bell in New Hampshire a few weeks back. Well.. we didn’t actually meet them. they figured out that we were from the colony.. what tipped them off was when I asked for  lots of hot sauce. . .. They didn’t say anything to us.then.. but Dom tracked me down on Facebook and we invited them by.

It was great getting to know them. They are fans of the show and had soem questions about ti.. but we ended up talking more about life, histories, dogs, everything else. Dom is an RN an a city council member for Barre.  Dom used to be a policeman and an EMT.  Hannah works in a bank. They met when Dom was a part time cop in Hardwick. He met Hannah at her bank when he was trying to track down some bad guys.   I thought that was a cool way to meet.  They were really cool folks and I hope we get to see them some more.  Dom would like to try out for Colony III .. We think he’d be awesome .

Later this evening we took Gabe down to meet his friends at the Fair.. we got a kick out of the no parking posters everywhere.. It’s just no fair !

So there ends my peaceful day.. Tiem  for bed.. more tomrrow..

Friday night – Airman first class Cafferky

Note: Text updated on 9/4

So.. today began without yesterday really ending.. Remember.. I said I left Billy’s party in Houston at 1 .. and drove 3 hours .. Well today I was in San Antonio to see friend Kevin graduate from basic training for the air force.

(tell you what..it’s 1 am.. I’ve had 2 hours sleep in the last 36..  I’ll finish the text of this tomorrow..)  Meanwhile.. you can see the pics !

nite for now.. all.. nite sam

OK..   It’s now tomorrow and I can add some color commentary to the pics I posted..
I spent teh mornign attending our good freind Kevin’s graduation from basic trainign in the air force. Kevin was one of Sam’s first and closest frinds. Since Sam’s passing.. keving has been a stedy presense in our lives.. we’ve helped him and he’s helped us as we all continue without Sam in our physical lives.  We love this kid so much thet there  was no way that I was going to miss representing our family at his graduation

I got to San Antonio about 4Am after a very cool and empty drive through the flat Texas night.  My original plan was to get a few hours of sleep in the car.. but Diane had had the good idea that I could use Martha (Kevin’s mom’s ) room.. She’s an early riser..   so when I got to the room around 4:30. she was waking up.. She went down stairs and red whil I caught 2 hours of much needed sleep. She came back up and woke me around 7.. handed me a red bull.. and off we went towards Lackland Air Force Base..

It was raining as we drove out to the base..   which unfortunately was to force the graduation exercise indoors.. That meant we didn’t get to see the guys march..

On the way out of town we passed a Holiday Inn.. I can’t be sure.. but I think this is the same holiday Inn i had the mumps in in 1965 or 1966.. All I remember is halucinating under the influence of a 106 degree fever.   My family used to come to San Antonio back then because my dad had some business with a radio station.. I rmemeber the long drives in the station wagon to get here before I10 was complete.. and before there was such a thing as car air conditioners..   Interesting memories.

We got to the base pretty easily.. I had to go through security clearence which I am please to report I passed.    Martha and I had to run to catch the buss to the  graduation ceremony.. They don’t mess around on schedules..

The short buss ride took us to Kevin’s training barracks.. it looked a little prison like..

We were lead to a holding room.. there were about 100 folks gathered to watch the graduation.. all were proud of their air men and air women.

In short order we were brought out to a covered deck under the dorm.. I guess we were to have had the cerimony after the parade that didn’ thappen. I for one was fine with indoors.. It was wicked hot..

The newly minted air people stood at rigid attention as we found our seats. Martha and I stood at the back

The head drill seargent called the guys to attention and the cerimony began. It was short and sweet.. and I have to say.. it kindeld a bit of patriotic pride I rarely feel these days. The female seargent reading the short intro pointed out the great thing that these kids were were doing by serving their country. I have to confess that I’d never given that part much thought when Kevin told us he was goign to enlist.. I thought about it more from his perspective.. building skills, learning discipline. helping pay for college, etc..  The more I thoguht about this service perspective, the more proud I got of Kevin.

We were then addressed by  Corperal Somebody.. His own nephew was in the graduating group. he Ta short inspiraitonal speach. It was heartfelt and funny. His main messages were.. get there on time. clean up affter yourselves. learn all you can about your job, and do the best you can do.. I suppose if you follow those rules, youcan skip the training. There.. I saved you all the 8 weeks of grueling training . inhuman treatment and insufficient food.

THe corporal then admisstered the oath that turned these guys into real airman.. they promised to abide by the standard code of military conduct, obey the president and his appointed leaders of the military and to server their country.. As I listend carefuly.. I realized it was essentially a  legal contract that the airman were signing with the military..

The oath was done.. and then the newly minted airman sang the US Air Force song.. recoreded here for your listening pleasure

At that point the officer declared the cerimony complete, he put the airman at ease.. and we gave them all a standing ovation..

We were then allowed to go up and grab our cadets.. Martha found Kevin in the back row.

Kevin looked good !> Kinda thin and eerily clean cut.. but it was still kevin. He was happy to have made it and we were so poud to be there to see him finish !

At that point kevin offered to take us on a tour of the training facility.. He showed us the stair well he ‘owned’.. Each airman had special responsibility.. and this was his..  he didn’t know why. but I explained that it was prophesisid long ago by Led Zepplin :

“… and he’s assining the stairwell… to Ke-vin”

(OK. you need to sing the song to get that.. )

Kevin then showed us his room

His bed

His snazzy uniforms.

even is hyperneat sock drawer

We couldn’t help slipping a little Sam mischief in there as well .

We got to see his official military portrait ..

Then we toured the day room.. where they had to do endless squat thrusts.. It was decorated wit military stuff. and reminders on how to behave

We met some of the other airmen in kevins flight.. this guy’s named is Balderas.. he’s either from Iowa or Illinois.. Kecvin wasn’t sure.. maybe Balderas isn’t even sure..

We even toured the bathroom.. (yuck)

I wnet around reading all the stuff pinned up on the walls.. Interesting and strange stuff.. i found out that the provide religious services for just about every denomination.. 87 flavors of christianity, jewish sercies, hindo, muslim, b’hai, bhuddist.. even Wicca.. That made me happy to knwo that despite the rigors of training they attempted to accomodate folks beliefs.

Kevin had a pin he put on his mom to identify her as an airman’s mom.. I offociated at this breif cerimony. Martha was really proud of her boy !

Then we were off.. Kevin was on leave till 6 or so.. We left on an appropriately decorated bus.. got our cars.. and left the base

First stop was a laundry place where Kevin got his new stripes sewed on to his uniform.

We called Diane to let her say hi to the new grad..

We then drove back downtown to the  San Antonio river walk. It’s a pretty magical place.. The San Antonio river flows about 15 feet below street levl.. the baks of the river are lined wiht small resturants..

We chose one

At nights you can eat on one of the barges as it motors slowly under the town.. it’s all lit up and mariachis hang around you until you pay them to go away. I rememeber coming here so many times as a kid !

We had a really nice mexican lunch.. then we walked up and down the river a bit.

Somewhere in theer Kevin showed us the ocin they’d given him for his graduation. He was to carry it at all times. He told us that when he reacehs 21, being  caught without it in a bar meant that he’d have to buy the drinks..

After lunch I still had about 30 min tbefore having to head to the airport.. So we wlaked down towards the allimo.. everywhere we went folks came up and shook kevins hand.. and said “thank you for your service” .. It was pretty cool

We took a short walk aroudn the alamo.. I remember visiting this so many times a sa a kid.  This is Texas’s most holy shrine. I remember as a kid that Texas history was more important than US or world history.

It was funny seeing this place through adult eyes for the first time..   It was still pretty cool

Then it was time for me to go.. We spent a few frantic minutes trying to find our way back to my car.. I hugged Kevin and Martha and headed off to the airport still on 2 hours sleep. .. It had been well worth the trip.. .

I was so proud of Kevin He starts 6 months of training now.. I can’twait to see what he  learns and what her learns abotu himself..

OK. that was my visit.. more about tomorrow.

Thursday night – billy and mom's birthday

Note:L new videos added to this post as of midnight friday
Sorry

for the delayed blog.. I didn’t want to let out the fact that I had

planned ot surprise by brother and mom at my brother’s 50th birthday

party down in houston.

I got down to Houston around 6 PM .. I

was off the plane for about 15 seconds when I remembered that wet

blanket feel of Houston summer air..How in the world did I survie

nearly 20 years of this weather ?   Weather aside.. The flat sprawl and

jungle heat felt familiar and welcoming..  I drove to our friend

Jenny’s house to meet up with my sister Mary.. her visit was also a

surprise. As I got out of the airconditioned car my glasses fogged up

from condensation.. How do people wear glasses here ?

I

grabbed a quick shower and caught up with Mary and Jenny.. Pretty soon

it was time to wander down to Shoeshine Charlies, the bar for billys

party. We wanted to be discreet as e walked in.. so mary and I put

decorated paper bags over our heads… real stealth.. especially wiht

my LED headpand going inside.. practicaly invisible !

We

walked in and quickly homed in on Billy.. beleive it or not.. he

couldn’t figure out who we were for a few seconds. When we lifted our

bags he freaked !.. He was genuinely surprised to see us.. which was a

surprise.. since our family surprises like  that are expected.. so not

showing up would be a bigger surprise.. does that surprise you ?

(wait.. did those last two sentances make sense ? )

It was

worth the trip down to see billy’s reaction.. He’d been worried that

nobody would show up.. By 8 the place was packed.. and it only got more

so as the evening progressde.

It

was great seeing so many relatives and friends from so long ago.. I ran

into my coausing Leslie.. whom I haven’t seen since Sam’s memorial ..

We used t build tents under dining room table and read dictionaries to

her.. Or..we’d take turns flicking my grandfather’s cigar ashes off..

much to his (probably faked) displeasure.

I

saw my freind Bill (who avoided my camera) . and his wife Jeanette and

their son (both in this pic)  . Bill was our mischiveous neighbor that

always got us in trouble. I rmemeber him setting off fireworks at Diane

and my wedding.

Oh

man.. here’s Bruce J and his Mom Bertha.. Bruce and his brothers were

our closest Neighbors and best friends growing up.  It was so cool

catching up with Bertha..  She and her husband Jim who

passed away about 2 years back.. were epic figures in our childhood

stories..Bertha was a school theacher, then principle.. who always

tested her new tests and reading equipment on billy and me.. I was

proud to be a lab rat ifor the betterment of texas ed.

My ausn sis and uncle phil from Ohio. also  showed up as a surprise..  I hadne’t seen them in ages either.. It was great catching up with them

I

got to see all of my nephews and neice as well. He’re Ben with his

girlfriend Sami and his friend Omar.. We had a good long talk about

rave toys..  Actually here were about 4 other burning man folks there

and we lamented being outside on this day 2 days before the brn .

The

party was open bar.. but.. I was strictly on diet cokes.. as I had a 3

hour drive to do afterwords. There was also a great Barbecue spread

from my brothers freind Professor Alex and his wonderful family..   I’m

not much f a meat eater.. but they had some of the best potato salad

I’ve ever had. ..

The

band was lightrock express.. a very good 70’s cover band of billys

firends and band mates.. Billy took the stage and belted out a good

‘Back in the USSR” and a couple of other numbers. I’ll try and upload

soem vids of that   He was defintiely looking and soundg good.

It was so wonderful seeing billy in his element and surrounded by so many folks who love him !.

As

I visited the gents at one point I saw a calendar for the Contenental

Club.. which is next door.. billy and his band are playing there on

Spet 24th.. If you’re in Houston, check it out !

THen

it was time to cut thte cake.. It was decorated with an image of

Billy’s iconic spray painted Nocona’s with the red cross.. he always

wears them in surgery .

Then we brought out another cake for my mom and sung happy birthday

to her .. and gave her some flowers.. IWe wanted to make sure she knew

she was loved too !

Then more singing, more dancing.. it was jumping..

I spent until about 1 AM milling around tlaking to folks.. hugging my family.. takign pictures..

Around 1 Anm things started to wind down.. So I hugged all my fmaily members

and

headed out.. Billy walked out wtih me to show me his 50th gift to

himself.. An amazing Adi A8.. owe of 140 made, top speed of 200 + MPH

with a Lamberghini rear mounded image, carbon fiber body panels..

We

are alike in so many ways.. but here.. we differ 🙂 .. I would not

know what to do with that sort of machine.. maybe dismantle it for it’s

wonderful parts

I

got on the freeway and pointed my rental towards san antoni.. it was a

3 hour drive through the straightest and flatest roads in amaerica.. I

drove the familier route listening to whatever I could get on the

raido, indian music, dico, christian raido, BBC..

I got to San Antonio about 4 AM..  and my next day began..

more on that later

Wednesday night – Not at Burning Man

I am not at burning man today…

I’m in Richmond VA at a work meeting

for most of the past 365 days of the year I had thought I would be. Burning Man .. for those of you who may not know.. is an annual festival in the Black Rock desert of Nevada. It draws about 50,000 of the most wonderfully eclectic freaks, artists, techis, hippiess, nudists, vouyers and all other sorts of folks that defy classification. (In fact.. Burning man has taught me that most folks defy classification)

I first went to Burning Man in 2008.  I also went last year. Last year, Homer lead our group to build an amazing device called the TimeCycle. a 20 foot diesel driven ferris wheel car  (i did the lights) . Building that thing, getting it cross country and keeping it running was a herculean feat… and it exhausted us all . . .. I’ll never forget riding that thing into athe sunrise one morning after riding around all night..

First time I went it happened as something of an accident. I was talking to my friend Ben about something else and he invited me to come along to the burn. What I found there rocked my world on so many levels. What hit me first was that I’d never imagined that there were so many folks like me that were passionate abou mixing art and expression with science and technoloigy .. There were folks with computere controlled flames that pulsed to music, giant animated dragons ,  giant floats of every shape covered with dancing people. lasers of every color crossing the sky.. and every where people covered in blinking, strobing a lights.. Strings of lights, halos of light.. whole light up costumes.. There were explosions of one sort or another all through the day and night.. and music everywhere.. I felt surrounded by kindred spirits.  The event ends when all 50000 folks gather around a 90 foot tallk wooden ‘man’ which is buildt in the center of the circular ‘playa’. The man is loaded with explosives and then torched.. It is an awesome spectacle.. indescribable, really.

The longer I stayed, tough, the more I got to feel the spirit of the place.. The whole event is cash free.. you can’t buy, sell or trade.. Everything is based on gifting and self-reliance There were very few rules.. the one I remember most is “label your flammables and explosives “..    The moto of the place was “safety third !”

While ome of the festival is just wild good time..  some of it was incredibly serene and peaceful. Every year the organizers also build a wooden building called ‘the temple’ which is a memorial to those who have passed on.  there were hundereds of people in the building at any given time.. making tributes to their loved ones.. I will never forget walking into the temple in 2008 with a bag of 300 Samstones..

Anyway.. I’m not there this year.. I decided for good reasons, that I had too many things goign on in my life here to be able to dissapeas for the week in the dessert without sleep.   It’s been a good decision. I’ve been able to get many things done these past couple of days.. I feel rested and peaceful.. That’s good. I’ll be back with my family after this short trip.. that’s good, too.

Today I’m in a meeting in Richmond VA.. there are no dancing naked people here, no explosions timed to music.. but.. the folks here are nice.. I had a good-though-complicated set of technical meeting today with some smart people.   None of them were covered in lights, but they were very good folks just the same. I made a good choice in not going to Burning Man this year.. At the same time, a little of my heart is there this week. I am sending out good times wishes to all my freinds on the playa..

Remember..folks.   ‘safety third” !
