Thursday night – the Kiki room

Super late… So this will be short. Went to a great conference today at the national institutes for standards and technology.NIST.Made some great work connections including this guy Jon from O’Reilly. He left us with this great quote:

NIST was pretty interesting. The walls were covered with pictures of famous and cool looking scientists

Afterwards went to a nice reception at the new maker space that’s part of the Montgomery county innovation office. It’s in a beautiful old courthouse building

Here’s my friend Dan showing off the white noise generator used to mask noise in the courtroom

The event ended early so I took advantage of being down here to drive the one hour into Maryland to see my friends Catherine and Vince. When we saw each other we realized we hadn’t been together in 19 years. Still it was as if no time had passed. We were with them when they met each other in Burlington. We visited them when they lived in England but had not seen them since they moved to the US

Katherine (a.k.a. Kiki) recently was diagnosed with cancer. She’s dealing with a combination of radiation and  Chemical therapies. It’s no fun. Even so, she was the same funny and boisterous good friend we’ve always had. Vince was also unchanged. It was so great hanging out with them tonight

I was also able to catch up with our mutual good friend Todd on the phone ride there. I really want to make a point of seeing these guys whenever I’m down this way now.

So great seeing old friends and reconnecting…

Wednesday night – Once in a blue moon

In a generic hotel in MD right now eating a good but lonely salad and drinking a beer. The hotel had several beer choices.. but I took my least favorite beer… ‘Blue Moon’..I think it tastes like bad home made beer.. and believe me.. i’ve made my share of bad home made beer.

Why .. you might ask.. with a good selection of beer would i choose my least favorite .. ..

Because of tradition !  Blue Moon was my Dad’s favorite beer.. he always bought it.. I think he thought I liked it.. I guess I did when I was drinking it with him..

Tonight I’m drinking it alone.. and I found it actually tastes ok if I think of him when I drink it.. 🙂

Monday night – happy birthday to me !

Thanks for all the great birthday wishes, everyone !

I had a nice, albeit busy birthday down here filled with phone and infernos meetings. All good stuff..

I do want to make up for being such a poor poster last night. My colony friends and I were all at vlad and edites last night. We wanted to be there for them. It’s been just two weeks since their beautiful daughter Bettina died..

It was a sad and wonderful gathering.. we hadn’t all been together since 2010. I can’t believe how close we all are after all that time.. Vlad was like our emotional center .. and we needed to be there for him and his family .. we all knew it.

Vlad showed us the magnolia that Betinna had gotten for them.. it never flowers in Feb.. just for Bettina ..

The house was as full and interesting as I remember it. The pool table was still covered with flowers and pictures

Amy, Vlad and I took advantage of the slow afternoon to drive over to 615 anderson.. where we lived

there was an event being filmed there.. so we were actually able to go inside.. not in the main rooms.. but in the yard and entry rooms. It was pretty surreal seeing this place again.. let alone being inside !

It was hard to believe that we’d been in there for more than 10 weeks straight !

from there we went down to the river to the place where we got our water.. how bizzare to wade in that filthy water again !

then it was back to lads.. as the others showed up. It was an amazing evening. unhinge, crying telling stories. It was like old times in some ways…

and in others really not..

my times through the night we toasted Bettina, Vlad, Edite and Ciad

I do love these folks .. amazing.. amazing, amazing evening

I’m heading back east tonight.. but my thoughts are with vlad and his family
