Tuesday night – off the island

Work today and Wood’s island… What a beautiful spot. It was a little cooler and overcast… I went for a run around the island again. We had an amazing breakfast of all the uneaten food… Macaroni and cheese for breakfast is pretty special. The other guys made spam and eggs… No thanks. We were pretty careful about eating our own food and not sharing for Covid reasons

Or one bit of mischief this morning was we made a slingshot to see how far we could chuck rocks… And eventually flaming potatoes

Then it was time to pack up… We’ve gotten a ride out with some of our gear on Chuck’s boat. This time we were on our own. We had a little more stuff than we had room to put so it was quite an interesting packing problem to get it all on two kayaks and two canoes

We were all laid down pretty heavily… Especially the canoes. It’s normally an hour and a half crossing took us three for the 3 1/2 miles. We had a stiff wind with 1 to 2 foot swells… And occasional 4 foot… We all stayed out of the water though… Which isn’t always the case on these trips.

We were very happy when we pulled into heros welcome.

John and aaron were pretty beat from all the weight they were carrying. We divided up the gear and split up. It had been a very good trip

I was in North hero and realized that I was only a few miles from Camp Abnaki… the camp we’re all three boys went. We have such great memories from there. We still provide a scholarship at that camp in Sam’s honor .

I drove into the camp… And there was absolutely no one there. This would be their busiest season… It was definitely pretty eerie. I walked around and remembered some of our parent weekends there… Put a few Sam stones around and headed out. It was a really nice pilgrimage

I got home in time to catch half of one of Diane’s yoga classes… I think I fell asleep the moment I lay down.

I put away my gear… Wash myself off… And had a wonderful dinner with Diane.

It’s so nice to be home. It’s also a little cooler tonight. Actually under 70°. Can’t wait to crawl into bed

Monday night – snakes

Really wonderful slow day on woods island .. i also note it’s our wonderful dog chaos 16 and 3/4 birthday. We love you chai baby

… If there was a theme today it is snakes. Started out with me seeing a big snake and then finding a snake skin in the adjacent camp and then we found another big snake… Kind of cool for an island

Sunday night (delayed) – in the tooth of the storm

Last Thursday we made the call to delay our ‘fire and water’ festival until

September . We decided to do that because the projected weather over this weekend was supposed to be rainy and windy through Tuesday due to a tropical storm . The weather service was predicting more than an inch of rain and 2 foot or more waves . We figured that would not be ideal for transporting or burning he pieces we made for the event . Even so … a few of us , gizzo, rebar, newt and me decided we’d camp anyway .. we wanted to go into to the teeth of the storm’

Well…

As often happens, the weather we got wasn’t the weather we expected . We paddled out the 3.5 miles from hero’s welcome on north hero .. there were a few sprinkles but mostly it was beautiful

Saturday night – Tesla movie

Beautifully slow and steamy day here Jonesville. I was just under 90° super humid. Nobody could move quickly so everything kind of went slow motion. And that it was nice. ‘Diane and I got out for a quick 5 mile hike in the middle of the day… It was so hot and buggy… But it was great getting our bodies moving. On the way walked by the wootans Beautiful house up in Honey Hollow. They have this great sculpture of kids skating and they had put Covid style facemask something. Really cute and poignant

Later this evening we have been invited to a screening of a new movie about to call the Tesla. We were invited because I’m part of the advisory board of the new Tesla Science Center at Wardemclyff . The evening started out with two demonstrations one by this guy Greg L.… Who makes huge tesla coil’s…

And then a short show by the group architect… That uses dual tesla coil’s to make really cool music. One of the guys plays guitar wearing a chain mail suit. Really cool I’ve seen them at several places

The main event was a new movie called ” Tesla”… By Michael Almareyda . It’s starred Ethan Hawke and Kyle McCalahan… (The mayor on Portlandia! ) It was really interesting. The storyline kept fairly close to the normal Tesla canon .. but it played around with it in a really nice way the leading woman was playing Ann Morgan… I don’t know the name of the actress but she was great.… They kept switching times and adding elements like Edison bringing out a smart phone. That kept it light. The movie was pretty artful… A little slow at some points but I really liked it… It’ll be very interesting to see how it plays when it’s released…

OK time for sleep… Tomorrow we head out camping rain or shine I think we’re gonna be rain
