Tuesday night – Social Notworking

Hmmmm.. i must have hit the wrong button a few weeks ago because all of a sudden I’m getting something called ‘endorsements’ from lots of the folks I know in Linkedin.. I have a bazillion connections in Linkedin.. but I don’t know why folks would all of a sudden start love bombing me with what they think i’m supposed to be good at. I must have leaned on the wrong button.

the notes come in and say something like

Congratulations! Your connection, XXXX , has endorsed you for the following new skills & expertise:

Hygiene

Kindness to reptiles

Gilligan’s island trivia

Well.. they’re not actually that strange.. but they might as well be..   Several folks have told me i’m good at project management.. HA !.. I can’t even plan my own breakfast. I’ve been anointed with skills in computer languages I’ don’t know and computer architecture components I haven’t though of since I was in college.

Its fun and flattering to see what folks think you know.. at the same time its kind of weird when folks say you’re good at that you yourself know that you’re not..

I think this points out a problem with social networking that I’ve been thinking of lately..it’s  that just because lots of people on the web think somethings true doesn’t make it true.  .

If we’re goign to do this, can we try to attribute some really interesting skills to each other like  ‘speaks to snakes’ .. or ‘glows in dark’ ,.

now t looks like i need to go brush up on my Perl (im a python man myself)

nite all, nite sam

  1. Notworking for me, too. I’m pretty sure I didn’t press any buttons in LinkedIn — My guess is its a glitch in the “new profile” stuff LinkedIn just rolled out

  2. Hey John. It’s a fairly new LinkedIn feature called “Endorsements”. When they first rolled it out they would show large groups of people to a user and say something like “Do these people have experience in C++?” and if you clicked yes, it would send a message to each person saying that you endorsed them. It’s not nearly as much of a personalized endorsement as they make you think from the email.
