Saturday night – haywire

Blissfully quiet day.. besides taking a long nap.  and a trip to the store with the dogs (here’s Chai sporting a champlain makerfaire hat)  the only thing we really got done today was to help our friends Jane and George get their hay in and stacked…

our job was to help load the hay on the truck and off the truck and stack it.. while someone else ran the bailer …

Stacking was satisfying work.. like a puzzle.. Here’s george trying to figure it out.. I managed to fall through a hole in the stack and pulled a groin muscle pretty badly.. I almost blacked out it hurt so bad.. but I managed to shake it ff. though I’ll be walking funny for a week.

Friday night– Art Hop

, The end of a very long and complicated but somehow satisfying week.

My last work call last night ended at 10:30 PM and my first call this morning was it 6:30 AM… I was great workday ended.
After work Diana and I went and visited our friends Gary and Tammy… We been meaning to see them for a while… It was really good to sit down and talk.

After that it was down to the art hop. Art is one of my favorite events in Burlington… Hundreds of artists and tens of thousands of visitors Mill around looking at each others stuff. Hoopers and musicians and artists Of all types.

We were there with the generator maker space announcement and the Vermont makers. We had a great set up with 3-D printers, computer controlled helicopters, Circuit toys, led throwies,

width=480
My absolute favorite was a really nice Jacobs ladder that my friend Colin and his father Tim had built For us using my old transformer. It’s a real work of art. Steam punk yet functional. 15,000 V of pure madness
I love the article, but what I realize is that I’m not that interested in art I’m much more interested in people who are interested in art… For that matter I’m not as interested in making things as I am interested in people who make things. I more of a people person than a maker person maybe?
I’ll have to ponder that.

Thursday night – resolutions

Today was Rosh Hashona.. the 2nd most hallowed day in my religion.. and despite my best intentions. i din’t get to take it off.. well. i actually didn’t want to take it off. Since the thought of sitting with others in shul didn’t appeal to me.. i’d imagined taking a long reflective walk.. but instead I ate soem apples and honey (actually apples and maple syrup) for a good new year then i ended up on the phone with a first all at 7 AM .. and a last one ending at 10 PM..Sounds bad, i know.. but as days go.. it was a good one.. i talked ot people i like.. and did some good and interesting work..

Interestingly, i ran into a couple of other MOT’s (Members o the tribe.. what Jews jokingly call one another) who were also at work… and feeling somewhat guilty about it.. so.. that was fun and comforting..

Even with he busy day.. i did manage to get soe good introspection. Rosh Hashonah is the beginning of the days of Awe…  when you think about what you did in the past yer.. and what you’  dlike to change in the coming.. It’s a bit like new years resolutions.. but its supposed to be more spiritual..   I’ve been thinking hard on this.. and haven’t come up with much..

Here’s what I’m thinking about some intentions for the coming year  ..  resolve to:

  • get more sleep
  • goof off more and be   little easier on myself
  • spend more time outside
  • try eating sweet potatoes
  • give away more things
  • write more code, make more stuff
  • talk a little less and be less certain that i’m right always
  • spend more time teaching
  • read more for fun

OK,. nothing earthshaking.. buts its all stuff i really beleive i can do.. well.. at least all but the sweet potatoes part

Wednesday night – disorganized religion

or  Leshana tova tika’teivu vete’chatemu    which roughly translates.. Happy new year, may you be enscribed in the book of life.

Today starts Rosh Hashona ראש השנה The head of the year.. Tonight is Ereve Rosh Hashana.. literally New years eve.. and what am i doing ? I’m hanging out wiht my family at home, helping my son with his homework.

and that  where I want to be .. These last few years I’ve really struggled to find my self in organized religion. As much as I like the music, the food, the neurosis of my cultural upbringing, i can’t get my head around the organized practice of any religion.including my own. I think it’s largely due to the spiritual awakening I’ve had since Sam’s passin.   It’s funny, because I’ve never felt more spiritually alive or alert.

Just because I’m not goign to synagog doesn’t mean I can’t pull still tap into soem of the stuff that does have meaning to me. The next ten days are  the most important part of the year. Between now and Yom Kippur Jews everywhere will introspect and figure out what adjustments needed to be made in the machinery of their lives. I’m in a good place for doign that right now.. I feel pretty solid and focused.. and there are a big pile of improvements and tweeks I could use to make in the coming year.

It’s also a time for apologizing to folks I may have wronged in the previous year. I’ll be thinking aout that as welll

Right now I’m htinking of slicing up an apple and dipping it in honey and hoping for a sweet yer for us all

L’shana tova everyone !
