Tuesday night – offline

I had an interesting experience today. I had the work equivalent of having Facebook ell you that you had too many friends.  Our internal messaging system (Sametime) told me that I had more than 500 chat friends and it stopped working for me.. Now.. don’t get the wrong idea.. i don’t regularly talk to 500 people, but these names tend to accumulate over the years, I had to do something to start clearing them out…I started the task a little apprehensively as It’s the internal equivalent of ‘unfreinding’ someone.. though they never know it happens.

I was surprised, releived and bummed out all at the same time when I found that mostly what I had to do was to remove friends from the list that were no longer working at IBM..

as I scrolled through the hundreds of names I clicked off the ones who had left. some had retired, some had moved on to other careers, some had been laid off.. some had died… As I  clicked ‘remove’ i tried to remember the last interaction I had with that person.  what had we worked on together ? how did I know them ? . i pictured their face.. and tried to conjure up where they were now.. and what had happened that made them ‘elsewhere now.  It was a reverse history of my last 15 years or so at work..

it brought back soem great memories..a  few sad ones.. and many ‘where are they now’ questions. n the end this was a much more spiritual and emotional exercise than it was a maintenance exercise..

it reminded me that working, like life,  is about relationships and about love.. .. it was nice to be  reminded

Monday night – Sam scones

Trying to ease back in to work after a really restorative week off. So far so good. I had wall to wall meetings today ..which allowed me to sneak in a littlem recreational work programming…

All the time i could hear diane and jen busy downstairs on a project, when i wandered downstairs at 6 i found our table (see last night's post) full of cool linen bags that looked like this

width=500

Our good friend deb has a coolie company called douglas sweets that makes scottish shortbread and other treats (great gift idea !) . Deb has created soemthing called 'Sam scones' in honor of sam. . Its a DIy scone kit and they are yummy ! She donates all the profits from those to sam cohn foundation for kids.

Maxs lovey gf Jac is a wonderful artist, and made this lhand made linoleum cut stamp for the bags

Sunday night – our table

Our table has been part of our family for more than 30 years. It’s been with us though weddings, births, birthdays, and mourning.

Its served countless breakfasts, dinners, perhaps just a few fewer lunches.. and sat laden for more parties than I can remember .. countless friends have sat around that table.. It’s been the site of many a night-before school projects, or night-before tax session.. i’ve written books on that tables, the kids have written papers, quilts have been made, cell phones repairs, . dianes made thousand and thousand  of wonderful meals.. on it.. m and 10’s of thousands of samstones have been made there..

today that table needed a little TLC.. it’s been wobbly for decades.. lately its gotten so wobbly and squeaky that’ it was staring to be hard to use..

so I flipped it over and saw what could be done.. we stretched out its skeleton and looked for all the wobbliness..

I unscrewed the table from the frame.. while I was there.. I put a little reminder to the next person who takes it apart.. ‘we were all here’.. at least in spirit.

the source of the porblem was the old 19 century hardware.. no threads left…   I assisted with a little 21st sentory deck screes.. mybe not  enhancing the value of the table as an antique.. but definitely adding to its utility..

when done, i plugged in tall the leaves to full party mode.. solid as a rock !

now theSam days and Thnaksgiving are over.. it’s time to shrink it bacl to space for just the three of us.. back to a little more peace.. and a little less activity.. unitl the next swirl

Thanks you table.. for all you have done for us.. we are happy to have you back, and we wish you long life.. I hope you next  30 years are as full of love and life as the  last ones have been .
