  1. Hi, John, sorry for the off-topic post. You may remember me from the AMA you did on reddit. I had mentioned that Bonnie and I say hi. Well, since then, I have taken an increased interest in what you have to say about engineering and tinkering. I have been a tinkerer my whole life, and Bonnie can attest to that. If it’s broken, I will take it apart and fix it, or take it apart and further break it. Either way, I learn something every time.

So, this brings me to my newest foundation when it comes to tinkering. I am hoping to begin a learning process that will focus on the make up of computer engineering. I do not necessarily wish to be a programmer, but I want to learn programming. I want to dig in to what makes the devices we use to tick. So, I decided I would reach out to you and see what you may recommend and where to start in the abundance of information concerning computer engineering. So far, I have taught myself quite a bit about blockchain technologies, internet privacy and security, and some simple scripting and console commands.

I have two reasons for exploring this new territory of knowledge. One, I want to move beyond what my knowledge currently allots, and two, I want to build a better foundation to understand these ideas more completely. I have taken steps beyond self-teaching by enrolling in some Coursera courses(Principles of Computing I, Cryptography I, Programming for Everybody “Python”, and ‘Internet History, Technology, and Security), but I am curious what you may suggest beyond that. I would mostly be limited to online courses, but I may also enroll in some University lectures if I find something near me that would be useful. My end goal is to harness enough understanding to be well versed in net security and pentesting, but I would also be very receptive to anything else along the way.

So, I suppose that is a decent introduction on what I hope to accomplish. Any suggestions you can offer will be greatly appreciated. Oh, also, any white papers you suggest. Those tend to keep me digging for new info and more white papers. Thank you for any input, and I hope you’re having a fantastic summer.

    Corey
