Monday night – fellow fellows

Greetings from the ibm learning center. Im here for a couple of days meeting with my fellow fellows from ibm. We get together every so often to connect and work on problems that cross organizational boundaries. I love these folks.. Each of them is an expert in some aspect of our companies business.. And with a company this size.. That makes for a pretty wide range of interests and experiences. . We have physicists, mathematicians, metallurgists , computer architects, circuit nerds, software folks, and business geeks.. I dont know where else youd get that kind of a mix under one corporate umbrella…

Heres a panel with this years new crop

The funny thing about this bunch is that many of them .. Most of them actually.are a whole lot of fun. Most of them have kept a playful spirit to their work and have remained excited and creative about their work even though most of us have at least 30 years with the company.. And some with 40… And even two with more than 50 years with the company !!

What a place..

It makes you want to dump out all the candy dishes and spell ibm

Sunday night – displaced

I woke today displaced.. .. by exactly 3 feet. Last night we moved all of our furniture in our room.. to make way for painting. Our bed is now about 3 feet further north than it used to be.. and I have to say the climate there is  just as nice as the old space.. still, it’s strange waking up and seeing almost exactly the same thing you see every morning.. but not quite..

Midday DIanes brother Steve showed up .. He’s coming back from visiting his new grandson Mason in New Hampshire. It was so good catching up with him. We took a nice walk up to the lower gorge.. As we went we caught up on family stories.. it was really great to hear all about our Kansas family.. IMG_4565

Too cold to go in the river today.. but I was tempted.

Saturday night – Ms Macha’s Kindergarten class

Facebook is a wonderful tool for reconnecting. Out of the blue yesterday I heard from my friend Steve who was my classmate in Ms Macha’s kindergarten class in 1965-65. It’s been great catching up with almost 100 years of non-common experience to share..  ..in addtion to memories, Steve  also had  this awesome class picture ..   We were trying to remember names. Tara, Laurie, Todd, Casey, Steve, Shelly, Heidi, Grant.. Porter….

Where are they now ? What have they done with their lives.    How many stories ? how many kids ?    If yo’re reading this and you see yourself.. let me know !

I’m  in the righ most table, inside row, 5th from the left next to my friend Tara..

Friday evening – Wasps

I had an early morning meeting downtown, then came back and worked at home all day. It was a great day to work in the bell tower . it was cool with bright sun. So cool in fact that all of the wasps that normally hang out in the tower were staggering around like drunken sailors. They were landing on my head and on my feet and on my laptop. After about an hour of that I stopped jumping every time one landed on me. See their stingers but they were in no mood to sting. They're actually fun to watch… They kept me company in fact One even landed in my tea and then lazily pulled itself out and flew away.

Drink… Or not to drink?… I drank

As the afternoon wore on the, air got warmer and the wasps got more lively. I swear one of them that landed on my leg just woke up two it's Waspy Ness as soon as it warmed up . it realized that it needed to defend itself. and had to brush it away before it stung me…

At that point, I realized there were more of them than me and they had Just a few weeks before the air gets too cold for them and they did whatever wasps do during the winter… Which I don't think involves survival.

I decided to leave them at peace and went downstairs and did my work. In their honor I lazily buzzed around the warm room in the bright sunshine spinning slowly and trying not to sting anything as I talked on the phone.

Night, night Sam
