wednesday night – dozen day

12/12/12  ..I don’t know why 12 feels comfortable, but it does. .  all day I was thinking of things that come in dozens.. like eggs… and ..bagels and doughnuts.. and .. um..what else … . bakers ?      At dinner Gabe made the sobering pronouncement that  this is the last triple date in our life time.. we had 01/01/01  .. 02/02/02, 03/03/03, …. 11/11/11 (my fave) .. and now 12/12/12  .. but.. alas.. the next go round on that is nearly 100 years from now and I plan on being out of town.. There’s nothing like that little drop of mortality to season your delicious (in our case) dinner of tortellini and miso soup..

As I chewed my 12 noodles and contemplated the cosmos I thought about how numbers rule my life.. I get superstitious.. both good and bad .. on certain numbers. I won’t drink from a glass  unless it’s been filled 3 times..In fact I do many things in threes especially when under stress..  I am afraid of the number 709.. but love the time 911 (my lucky number.. go figure) .. 411 means someones thinking of me.. and 420.. well…. uh….  i like that too .

For what its worth.. this conversation reminds me a logarithmic clock I created a few years back.. (windows only.. I’m afraid)

oops.. gotta go to a late night work call..

Before I do.. let me remind folks about Echo’s 2nd annual ‘That’s Brilliant ‘ event tomorrow night. This years theme is inventions for winter.. Come check it out !

Tuesday night – Social Notworking

Hmmmm.. i must have hit the wrong button a few weeks ago because all of a sudden I’m getting something called ‘endorsements’ from lots of the folks I know in Linkedin.. I have a bazillion connections in Linkedin.. but I don’t know why folks would all of a sudden start love bombing me with what they think i’m supposed to be good at. I must have leaned on the wrong button.

the notes come in and say something like

Congratulations! Your connection, XXXX , has endorsed you for the following new skills & expertise:

Hygiene

Kindness to reptiles

Gilligan’s island trivia

Well.. they’re not actually that strange.. but they might as well be..   Several folks have told me i’m good at project management.. HA !.. I can’t even plan my own breakfast. I’ve been anointed with skills in computer languages I’ don’t know and computer architecture components I haven’t though of since I was in college.

Its fun and flattering to see what folks think you know.. at the same time its kind of weird when folks say you’re good at that you yourself know that you’re not..

I think this points out a problem with social networking that I’ve been thinking of lately..it’s  that just because lots of people on the web think somethings true doesn’t make it true.  .

If we’re goign to do this, can we try to attribute some really interesting skills to each other like  ‘speaks to snakes’ .. or ‘glows in dark’ ,.

now t looks like i need to go brush up on my Perl (im a python man myself)

Monday night – dads night out

Last night diane held a community yoga class and a holiday market here at the house. All our friend brought cool stuff to sell… Most of it handmade. Lilly was there doing henna.. I got the ibm logo tattooed on my hand

Last night was also the compassionate friends candle lighting for kids who have died .. We lit a candle for sam and for the 2nd nigh of chanukah

I ended up staying up late workig last night.. Ten didn’t sleep all that well. I dreamed i was in the hunger games and i was trying to. Help kids by making them all sorts of cool weapons..but they were trying to kill me anyway… *sigh*

I had a long and productive day…i was pretty beat by days end… But I was looking forward to the evening.. It was our annual dads ‘shopping’ night. Its a tradition we’ve been doing for a long, long time..by our estimate it was our 20th year. It used to be really about shopping.. Wed grab a few beers at the daily planet then we’d hit the stores…lately we do more beer drinking that shopping. It was so good catching up with these guys.all among my oldest friends …kids most are empty nesters now…we talked of kid and wives and old times… A good time with good friends

We bummed a few birthday candles off the nice waitress and made a makeshift menorah and celebrated the third night of Chanukah daily planet style.

We broke up around 9.. A few of us made a feeble attempt to shop.. But the rainy and warm night didn’t feel much like christmas … So one by one we drifted off..

Not as exciting as it once was..but still comfortable… And comforting.

Cant wait till next year..no scratch that..happy to wait until next year..no sense rushing things

Sunday evenng – 7PM Please light a candle for sam and all kids who’ve died

Tonight is the annual compassionate friends candle lighting. At 7pm we’re asking our friends to light a candle for Sam and all other kids who have left this earth before their time. Compassionate friends is a world wide organization that brings together families who have lost a child

Lost a child… i don’t like the way that sounds.. it doesn’t really capture the reality.. .. i don’t feel like we lost sam.. he’s so much present in our life.. he’s hardly lost… he just is no longer on this earth..

We will light that candle for you tonight sam as we do so many nights..

Our hearts go out to all others in this ‘club’ i’d love never to have joined..

nite all, nite sam… we’re thinking of you tonight
