Diane and I are down visiting Max and Backy in Brooklyn. We got here midday and spent a nice quite day hanging out wiht Max while Becky worked.  We took a great walk with Max , our visiting freind Wylla .. whol is vfrom Vermont bu lives in Santa fe..and is visiting NYC..   and Becky’s brother’s dog Nimra. 

It is fun for us seeing whats goign on in Brooklyn .

we walked by House of Yes where Becky has worked until recently.. aMax soemtimes does sound and lghts here. 

 

part of  House of Yes is the worlds best (ok NYC’s best) falalfel shop. Queen of falalfal 

 

they have my favorite sauce.. Green Schog.. .. or 

      סחוג as my freind Shmul spells it (Shmul.. I hope to take you up on your offer to go to a

class 

 

while we waited for food, we checked out the custume room at house of  Yes.. interestign titles !

from there we walked back.. admiring the great street art !

 

at home we dug intou our food.. Yum !

 

we took a quick visit over to maxes apaertment to pick up soem stuff..

tonight Max and becky had tickets to a cool puppet show… whih was sold out. Diane and I used the time to go visit our good freind Sho uptown. Sho’s got a very, amazingly wonderful appartment on W 94th. It’s like a zen jungle on the 17th floor.. really beutiful and thoughfully layed ut. 

 

We hung out and caught up with Sho. he’s doign great !

 

We all went out for Thai food 

 

then Sho walked us back to the train.. and we headed back to Brooklyn

 

Now back at Becklys.. and we’re heading to sleep..

I am sooooo proud of Gabriel..

Today he  defended his senior honors biochem thesis . His thesis is titled Cross Talk Between IKAROS and RUNX1 in Myeloid Leukemia . It describes the work he’s done over the last 2.5 years with Dr Jess Heath, a wonderful pediatric oncologist. The work explores  the role of two proteins in the evolution of  a particular form of leukemia .Here is the smiling (near) graduate wiht his momma and his advisor Jess. 

Gabe wore a periodic table sock and a beer sock today for good luck ..  .. and it worked ! We heard form Gabe and Jess that his defense went great ! Lots of tough questions.. and a great outcome !  

I’m so proud of the  work Gabe’s done. He’s  developed deep lab skills and learned so much in the process of doing some very important sceince. The report is really an amazing read. It outlines the experimental path that Dr. Heat, Gabe and his colleagues used to validate their hypothesis that these proteins play an important role in the mutations that cause this type of cancer. I’d love to  include the  paper here, but I can’t include the paper here because its part of a paper that is being published in a journal for the American hematological  Society which Gabe will be listed as a co-author.  When it comes out, I’ll blog on that too

 

On the way back to Gabes I found 20 Euro cents on the ground.. how strange is that ?

Our friends Phil and Lizzie were here this week and they poitned us at this great video posted by our mutual good friend VInce. It’s of all three of our favorite old Pub in Braishfield UK. It was called the Newport.. I don’t think it’s there any more.. but it was such a great place. We used to go there often when we lived in england.. We’d run there from work (10 miles round trip). and go there to play Conkers.. .. (chestnut wars) .. 

It brings back great memories. 

 

Vince wrote of it:

This was my all-time favorite English pub, The Newport. It was in the countryside in Braishfield village, Hampshire. It was like this every Friday and Saturday night apart from the two guys in smocks who weren’t regulars (not a comment on their digestive system).
Around 9pm the formidable, and wonderful, landlady, Janet would take to the piano and the rest of the evening was a sing song. It felt like you had stepped through a time warp into the 1940s.
And the beer was good too. Horndean Special Brew.
Sadly Janet has passed on, and the pub is gone too (I think). So this is in loving remembrance of Janet and the special place she made.

it’s a long video.. but you quickly get the point. One special thing for all of ius is that you can hear Vinces wife Catherine.. the only american voice you here.. singing away loudly..

Catherine died last year.. . she was such a fun person. it’s wonerful to hear her having so much fun here !

My good friend Nadja shared this with me a few weeks back after we were talkign about the wonderful way that German words are created. You jsut keep concatenating the words t omake these crazy long compond nouns. THis is one of the best.

sorry there’s no translation.. btuit it’s basically about a woman named Barbara who makes great Rhubarb pie. SHe opens a bar that attracts soem barbariens as regular customers. The barbarians have really cool beards They bring in a thirsty baber to groom  their beers. WHich leads to them serve beer in the bar. where they hire a barmaid called Barbel.. and there you have it
