Thursday night – All saints day

Happy all saints day…you know , I sometimes wish that I was in a religion that had saints.. Saints are a pretty cool bunch. People who are remembered for what they did.. and what they believed. I l especially like the idea of patron saints.  I found this list on Wikipedia..

I like the fact that the same guy, St. Amand,  takes care of brewers and boyscouts.  .. and that St. Barbara takes care of firework makers and mathematicians (now that would be a cool party) ..Hey wait, St. Elmo has pyrotechnicians.. does that mean firebugs have a choice between him and St. Barbara.. I guess they go with Barbara if they’re good at math.   And.. how how did St. Dismas end up protecting thieves ?   And Gan Bing.. how did he end up with the eunuchs… (or do we want to know ? )

As an engineer I have my choice of St. Patrick (no snakes.. but carried a slide rule ? ) Eligius or Ferdinand III. How does one go about choosing ?

I wonder if modern professions will get their own patron saints ? Who will become the patron saint of social networkers and bloggers ? What about the patron saint of video game designers ?   I understand that canonization takes time. so  I think we should begin lobbying for them now,

Wednesday night – helloween

You know, I was thinking last night that I was going to title this post ‘Hollow-een’ because I just wasn’t feeling the halloween spirit.. despite Diane’s very cute Halloween yoga last night

but today really surprised me. First of all. I miraculously had no meetings on my cal.. none.. that’s actually never happened to me on a non vacation day . or at least not in the last 10 years, I think I must have had an all day meeting scheduled that got canceled. I made good use of the time.. I caught up on some programming work for my job that I was itching to get to ..I didn’t get it all done.. but I made good progress. Late afternoon Istopped to do an absentee ballet for next week .. which felt good.

then i went over to homers to put some finishing touches on a demo we’re doing that’s due this week.. miraculously (again) it actually came together as it was supposed to.

Later , I met Diane at Marci’s house for a little proxy trick or treating.. we sat in front of her house a,played with Lilly and Finn and helped hand out candy (ok.. we helped eat candy…)

then Diane and I drove in to Richmond for a little nostalgic walk. we only had two stops in mind.. Gretchen and Marshals for home made doughnuts.

(see marhsall.. he’s ‘waisting time… ‘.. ugh)

then a stop at Bridge street for old times sake.. Marvin always hosts all the town’s grownups there..  what a great guy !

it was  a great night . it’s been all three kids favorite holiday…. i think mine too.. Here’s a great halloween memory of Sam

ok.. more tomorrow.

happy Halloween all, happy Halloween sam

Tuesday night – Gabe’s Ink

It’s Oct 30th.. Cabbage night.. time for mischief.. No real mischief today, though.  The storm really missed us last night. All the schools were closed ..because of expected bad weather but the sun was out  a large part of the day. The big event was that Gabe used his hurricane induced day off from school to get the tattoo he’s wanted forever as a tribute to his brother. He’s given this a ton of thought.. he decided to use the Mayan glyphs that spell sam’s name.  Im proud that he’s chosen to honor his brothers memory in this way..   He had good morale support today.. Raya and Marcello were there to help.. (as was I) ..

he said it didn’t hurt much..

Sam wore those same symbols on a cartouche around his neck..

now Diane, Gabe and I wear those same symbols around our neck..

It’s also on the tribute rock in our garden.

You’re a good kid Gabe Cohn..! I love you very much..

Monday night – waiting for Sandy

Sitting here waiting for hurricane Sandy.. it’s a bit like going to the doctors to get a shot.. you know it’s goign to hurt, but htere’s nothing you can do but wait for it. So that’s what we’re doing. Things are very quiet here right now.. a few small gusts. but actually pretty calm. .. not a drop of rain has fallen either. I’m very wary of dismissing this storm though.. folks may remember my epic miscalculation around hurricane Irene last year. I was too quick to declare that our town was safe.. that was before I saw the devastation in Richmond and our neighboring towns the next morning

So we will just wait and see. Our thoughts are with everyone who’s in the the path of this monster storm. Good luck !
