saturday night – oriented

Today we dropped Gabe off for college.. but only for practice this time. Today and tomorrow are Gabe’s college orientation weekend. We spent the day there (8am–8pm) checking out the campus, listing to talks, and meeting other parents. it was really fun.. it was particularly fun seeing the place I’ve known for 37 years through the eyes of a student.. and through the eyes of all the folks from out of state. and I have to admit.it’s a very special place.

things were very well organized. gabe checked in, and got his key for the night..

he’s staying in harris millis.. the same place I first visited in 1977..

he got his CAT card ID..

then we headed off to the first presentation..

they fed us in a giant tent… luckily, the tent wasnt necessary.. the weather was gorgeous most of the day.. we told all the out of staters that ‘it’s always like this here’ 🙂

we attended several lectures..on campus life, academics, foreign study etc.. it reminded me how hard it was for me to sit still and pay attention in school .. my patience for listening to someone talk is about 15 minutes..

thnak goodness i brought stuff to play with..

We had a bit of down time in the middle of the day so Diane and I walked down to Generator to check out the National Day of Civic Hacking ..

there was a great turnout . here’s nick and a new recruit working on our Lakecraft project.. its the mapping of the lake champlain region inoto the kids game minecraft . It all started at the national day of civic hacking last year !. It waas great being able to host this at Generator ..

here’s my buddy matt

now.. time for bed.. more UVM stuff in the morning..

Friday night – elijah’s stone

This afternoon i attended a very short, very moving ceremony at MMU to commemorate e our friend Elijah Todd Davis. Elijah died last year just two weeks after graduating from MMU. He was headed to the marines in the fall.  Family and freinds, including  the MMU LAX team came to pay respects and place a stone Gabe engraved near a newly planted tree. One by one, the lacrosse team players filed by the stone. and bent down to touch it. It was so touching and sad..

Here is Elijah’s family, our good friends the Davis’s..they are such good people.I was glad to see everyone here to support them.

After the team filed b the stone they went out tot the field. Soon they did senior honors.. each team’s seniors came out on the field and were announced.. her’s gabe running out.

Bucky asked everyone to remove their helmets and hats and we had a minute of silence for Elijah..   then thy played the star spangle banner form the marine corp band.. again in honor of Ellijah who’d signed up for the marines.

The teams played well…

after the game, gabe, raya and i went out to mexicali’s (my 2nd time there today)_ for a quick dinner..   THer eI ran into my friend steve and his wife jody.. Steve is the guy i met on an airplane that had my name (almost) tattooed on his arm with atoms..   He has C H O N.. the most common elements n living organisms.

i ended up making shirts out of those same atoms after steve gave me the artwork.   I just swapped them around to  C O H N

ok. long day.. thats it for now. more tomorrow

Thursday night – Tea and Team

Lots of events celebrating the near end of Gabe’s senior year. Last night was the Senior Tea.. all the sudents and parents met fo music, snacks and catching up.. very nice to see everyone !

Tonight was Gabe’s lacrosse dinner.  right before Dinner, Max showed up from NY. He was up for just 2 hours on his way to a fire spinning festival. It was so nice to see him..

around 6:30 the whole lacross team showed up and filled up on soem of dianes wonderful lasagna..   it was funny o see the kids ot of pads and helmets..

after dinner we did soem fire mischief.. First we sacrifised a lacrosse ball to the g=ds of thermite !  we willed a can with a lacoss ball, then filled the rest with thermite.

we lit it .. and got back

amazingly, the ball half survived !it looked like a shrunked orange..

then we got out some ammonium dichromate.. looks like orange sprinkles, but turns into a  huge pile of green ash when it’s lit. it looks so much like a real volcano !

Fianlly. we did a cremora bomb.. this time with only half a can of cremora.. with a little ‘sklitter’ (ferrotitanium) sprinkled in..

a satisfying woosh.. then .. surprise !

a huge 20 foot smoke ring that hung around forever !

Amazing !

finally Max did soem fire staff and rope dart for ius.. he’s gotten so good !

OK .. thats all the fun i can stand for a day.. time for a bath.. more tomorrow !
