Thursday night – broken bad

Oye.. I’m back from vacation and overwhelmed.. I have so many things I need to get done in the next coupe of weeks.. my head is spinning.. It’s spinning so hard, that I did the only logical thing I could think of, I sat down with my beautiful wife and watched some TV.. now, that might not sound like anything special.. but you have to understand that in our 30 years as a couple we’ve never really even had a TV hooked up in the house. sure .. we had some flirting with the TV .. we watched  a season of ’20 something’ in the late 80’s while I was in grad school.. and we have the occasional Jon Stewert/Stephen Colbert habit.. But something happened when I got my IPAD, The IPAD is a gateway drug to Netflix, and Netflix leads to harder stuff, indeed. First it was ‘Dirty Sexy Money’.. a 2 season drama-comedy about ultra rich folks.. totally stupid, but entertaining.. that lead to a brief dependency on Portlandia.. which we soon found too close to our reality so we went cold turkey.. But now.. we have it bad.. really bad.. as in Breaking Bad.

I’m so overly fascinated with that show..   The show is so demented that you just can’t look away. Like every other middle aged guy who watches it you can’t help but think ‘ that’s why i studied chemistry !’   I love the science they work in.. it’s carefully researched.. and just carefully enough disguised not to encourage folks to try doing  the stuff at home..   I’m only half kidding when I say that the show does a great job of promoting science..

Hey, whatever works !

Wednesday night – more from my folks

We’re back home from our two part vacation.. both ends were very good. We left sherborn about 6:30 this morning and i worked most of the way home in the car. By noon I was completely up to my neck in work again. but it was so good to get away !

I know I posted some of these pictures from our visit to my folks yesterday, but that was from my phone standing on a street corner in downtown boston at 1 AM. Let me try again with a little more commentary

Here I am wiht bro-i n-law John L and my nephew Jake !

my kids taking over the job of terrorizing my sister.

my nephew theo went in to my bag an pulled out my cell phone jammer (yes, I have a cell phone jammer) and started walking around the house with it.. within minutes everyone was disconnected.. it was so funny.. both o see what happened.. and to see how dependent on connectivity we all were even though we were all on vacation !

here’s a version of the family picture process.. i’ll bet it was fun to watch

Tuesday night – happy birthday dad !

I’m at south station in Boston after just having dropped max off. He’s off for a nighttime trip back to Brooklyn. Heading back to my folks house now for a couple of hours sleep before we head home early tomorrow morning.its been a good trip and the end of a good vacation
Lots of hanging out with family today…. 18 of all in the same house… 19 if you count Sam who was so much there in our thoughts. We spent the day all getting re-used to each other and catching up. It felt good.
Tonight we celebrated dads 82nd birthday. His actual birthday isn’t for most than a week… But we were All together so why the heck not ?!
We had a big lobster dinner., then we all took turns telling dad what he meant to us. The common themes we heard were his love of others, his support of us, his advise to find what you love doing and do it… And his unfailing good nature. What a guy . I hope it meant as much to him as it did to all of us . We love you pa !

Monday nght – Slip and slide

Day two of our mini family reunion. My sister and her three kids arrived today. Mary’s husband john arrives tomorrow. It’s been a really nice time.. Lots of folk for this size house.. with folks 3-82.. lots of activity.. The pace goes from sleepy (at last count, 3 cohsn asleep on the floor) to frenetic.. I spent several good hours talking to my dad.. He cant always remember things from earlier in the day.. but he can tell you things about the navy from 60 years ago. I love listening to him.

mid afternoon we did what cohns do when we gather.. invent and make mischief. We decided to take advantage of the slope in my folks yard to build a 100 foot slip and slide. Max and gabe went to home depot and picked up a 10′ by 100′ 6mil tarp and two bottles of dawn dishwasher soap. We fashioned some wire stakes and pinned it all together. Withen the hour we were siding.. it was so much fun.. Even grandma slid..

Now things are getting sleepy again.. and I have some work to catch up on.. so I’ll sign out till tomorrow

I do want to note with sadness the passing of my good friend Gunther Eschenbrenner. My friend, Sandy’s father. He was 87. I often hung out at Gunther and his wife Ellen’ house as a kid in Houston. Gunther moved to Vermont to be near Sandy last year. He was an engineer and a humanist.. I liked him very much and will miss him..
