We were just down there for a week.. and also the week before new years… so .. it feels good to be back in our own home.. fires going.. the small of dianes spicy thai drunken noodles .. dogs curled up by the fire..

that gives me some much needed time to do some useful work.. like this

Wednesday evening – Saying goodbye to Marcia

We spent the day saying good bye to Diane’s mom Marcia.  It was a long, sweet day, the service and the people there were really nice.. people hung out and talked for a long, long time at every step.. no one was in a hurry to leave.. we all came away feeling both sad and good.

Prep for the day was not so peaceful. We were due at the church for visiting at 10.. which meant a frantic blur of prep at the house. We couldn’t find an iron, so I had the bright (I thought) idea of hangign them in the bathroom to steam them.. somehow that ended with the door to the one  batrhoom soemhow locking itself witht he steaming clothes inside and all of us on the outside.  I franticaly searched the house for tools to open the door. Gabe.. my fater in law was a mechanical engineer and machinest and had every tool known to man.. except it seems a phillips head screw driver.   I finally found one phillips head after finding 12 slotted screw drivers and got the door open.

THe hot water was gone by the time we broke in.. but the shirts were all wrinkle free ! Marcia woudl have thought it was pretty funny..

I felt Sam very present today.. He an Marcia were very close.. as were she and all her grandkids.. Gabe and Max told me that they used to call gamma to get clues on how to beat video games like Zelda that she always cracked faster than they did.

we got to the church on time after-all. The place is well known to me now due to all the funerals I’ve been to there..a. It feels good to me to be there,

we spent an hour talking to friends..

I did an old testament reading (Isaiah 49:13-16a). Max did the pall laying. Max and Gabe and I were pall bearers..

We took Marcia out to the herse and jumped in our car.

My brother in law Joe just retired after 30 years as a police detective.. so we had lots of police there in uniforms.. including camo-ed swat officers. We were all set for the drive to the cemetery. They gave us a full escort.. and blocked roads for us when we turned.

the cemetery where we took Marcia is the same place where big gabe, his mom and dad , his sister teresa, and brother armond are interred..

Diane’s dad had a military color guard at his funeral complete with rifle shots.

No guns for Marcia.. so Diane  had pulled a bunch of roses apart to place on the ground at the cemetery .

it was a nice touch.

there was a very short service inside the masuleam.. then we came back out into the bright sunshine. We found the place where Marcia was going  alog wotj bog gabe.

I put a samstone on it.

Tuesday night – pick up

Greetings from a snowbank at the Syracuse airport. I’m up here waiting for Gabe’s plane to arrive from Jackson hole.

Both boys are in for Marcia’s funeral tomorrow. It will be nice being together even for such a sad event. More of Diane’s family Came in today… We have quite a houseful at Marcia’s . Lots of food lots of stories… It’s been pretty fun.

Today we went to the funeral place… Got to say goodbye to Marcia. It is so surreal to see someone that you knew and loved not moving like that. Somehow I think it helps. It makes it “real”…

There we went to Staples to copy the programs for the actual funeral tomorrow. It was so strange being in those two very different places within the space of a half an hour.

OK… Gabe’s plane is landing any minute. More tomorrow

Monday night – Marcia’s obit

Spent the day working in the basement of Marcia’s house .. while Diane and her brothers worked on arraignments  for Marcia’s  funeral on Wednesday. It was pretty surreal.   We chose readings, Diane chose flowers..  Joe and Steve handled logistics…

Marcia’s obit came out in the Binghamton Press and Sun today.

Marcia L. Mariano 1936 – 2018

Marcia L. Mariano Obituary
Marcia L. Mariano

Endicott – Marcia Lou Fox Mariano, 81, has passed away peacefully on January 4, 2018 at her home in Endicott, New York. Marcia was born on October 7, 1936 in Chenango Bridge. Marcia was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Gabriel Mariano, by her beloved grandson Samuel Mariano Cohn, by her granddaughter Susan Lynn Mariano, and by her parents Brainard A. Fox and Marjorie G. Fox. Marcia is survived by her children, Steven (Denise) Mariano of Leavenworth KS, Diane (John Cohn) Mariano of Richmond VT, Joseph (Patricia) Mariano of Endicott NY; grandchildren: Stephanie, Michael, Elizabeth (Chris), Maxwell, Gabriel, Vincent (Trish), Victor (fiancé Pina); great grandchildren Austin, Emma, and Mason. She is also survived by sisters: Frances (Thomas) Hull of Binghamton NY, Marlene (Steven) Truex of Syracuse NY, Nancy Jean Fox of Ravena NY; brother Richard (Susan) Fox of Port Dickinson NY; many nieces and nephews, and by her dear Aunt Jeanne Ruffo, Chenango Bridge NY. She is also survived by sister-in-law Ann (Bob) Woods of Lynchburg PA. Marcia graduated from Binghamton North High School and went on to enjoy jobs in retail beginning with Montgomery Wards in Binghamton, then with K-Mart and Burt’s Department Store in Endicott. She excelled at homemaking – loving to care for babies and in the care and nurture of her children. Spare time found her doing fine crafts such as painting ceramics (many were gifts for others), crocheting beautiful afghans and throws – gifts for her family, friends and Hilltop Nursing Home residents. She had a great memory of family history and began recording our genealogy; a passion which continues with her son Steve. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday January 10th at 11 AM at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, 701 West Main St., Endicott NY. Entombment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City NY. The family will receive friends at Church from 10 AM until Mass time at 11 AM. Expressions of sympathy in her memory may be made in the form of donations to the Sam Cohn Foundation at www.samstones.org.

Published in Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin from Jan. 8 to Jan. 9, 2018

There was one  twist when it came out. After several back and forths with he funeral home and the newspaper, we got a clean copy we liked…   When it came out in the paper today there were 7 question marks spread through the text eg .. it said

Marcia Lou Fox Mariano, 81, has passed away peacefully on January 4, 2018 at her home in Endicott, New York?? …

Joe called the paper and got it changed and it will run again tomorrow. I’d like to think Marcia would think that was pretty funny,

Gabe comes in tomorrow.. and we’ll all be together.. .. almost
